      The Value of a Drink

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink, I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
      ~ Jack Handy

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin,of Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Nvidia said that because laptop cards are so specialized they have you go through the laptop manu. site for the updates. I got a newer BIOS and driver and now SU is running just fine.
      Thanks

It's a Toshiba Intel 2core, with a 7600 Nvidia card. I downloaded the latest driver from Toshiba, since Nvidia's site said that's what to do. SU still hangs the minute I launch it. Should I try Toshiba's tech support, Nvidia support, or is there more you can do?
      Thanks

F8, thanks I knew it was one of those. I've been there just couldn't remember. If that doesn't work than perhaps there is a larger problem.
BTW, she said it was her cat that started the problem. I left it alone.

My mother in law some how managed to get her computer stuck in safe mode. Every time she turns it on it starts up in safe mode. What is the procedure for getting the machine back to "regular" windows mode.

    • RE: Where do you work?

I work out of here mostly, we have an office downtown but it's no fun, and since I'm half the business, well let's just say my partner and I have an understanding. Though I will say it's great ( the downtown office) for impressing clients.
My office is on the left side. The building is an old 1 room school house I converted into our home 20+ years ago.
We love it here. Just outside of Madison.

You would think that here in Madison, it would be everywhere. Not the case. I haven't been around, or been where it was around, in many a year.
Here's an aside. We where paddling (2 days ago with another very straight looking couple)on upper Mirror Lake, and we came upon 2 kids passing a joint back and forth in their canoe. As we passed them, I said they need to paddle over to the shore, "we are the Lake Delton undercover narcotics squad." The look on these 2 kids faces was priceless.
Pot still makes you a hell of a lot more paranoid than alcohol ever will.

If some one can convert this into a link, cool. Otherwise copy the url and paste into a search. It opened with Windows Media Player. The file won't upload because of the extension.

A slightly different take on John's yumo pea soup.
2 -3 Ham hocks, they're smoked and usually available.
      A couple of large onions
      bag of carrots
1 bag of dried split peas
      bay leaf's
      salt
      pepper
a spec of good chili powder, (2 tsp.) optional

Split the skin and boil the ham hocks; stock pot maybe 2 -3 qts of water.
They will render a rather greyish looking foam. Skim that off until there is no more.
Add the coarsely chopped onions and the carrots.
Add bay leaf and the salt and pepper.
Simmer until the ham meat starts to fall of the bone. This will take a couple of hours. When things start smelling really good you are getting close.
Rinse the dried split peas and add.
When the peas start to soften remove the ham bones and strip the meat.
Add the meat back and cook down till the whole thing is nice and smooth. Stir occasionally, as it cooks down it will start to stick to the bottom of the pan.
      Remove the bay leafs.
Taste and adjust seasonings. Thin with water or wine if it gets to thick.
Cool slightly, and serve with a nice crusty bread, or soda crackers.
and of course a good dry white wine.
As you might expect, it gets better over the next couple of days.

      Guacamole;
After much experimenting it come down to the basis.

1 clove of garlic, smashed and diced
1 firm medium plum tomatoe, fine dice
fresh squeezed lime to taste. one should do it
1 halepano pepper, pull out ribs and seeds. fine dice
hand full of diced celantro. flat leave parsely will substitute.
      salt to taste.
optional; teaspoon of good chile powder.

combine all in a bowl. mash until smooth. taste and adjust seasoning to your liking.
chill overnight. serve with chips and margaritas.
stand back as you very likely get a chip in the back of your hand.
