    • The loss of a long time Sketchucation member Susan Moses

This message of condolence is also an announcement to those who knew our colleague, fellow modeller and friend. Susan (Moses) O’Kane, lost her battle against cancer and past away early Monday the 10th of November. A designer, known throughout the SketchUp community, was a teacher, guide and example for others who received her instructions in striving for the betterment of their work. She was a professional, an inspiration, a friend and will be missed dearly.

      Best regards,

      Things are far to orderly
The chairs are to perfectly pushed in and lined up
      Turn the lights on
      Add wall switches and outlets
The wall seem to have a bit too much specularity

Overall these are really quite good it is just missing the details.

Now You Can Buy an Entire House from Ikea

Have you ever spent a Saturday afternoon strolling through Ikea, thinking, If only I could live at this magical place? The Swedish company hasn't begun renting its showrooms just yet, but it has partnered with Oregon architectural firm Ideabox to launch a line of prefabricated homes.

      Allan,

It is a nice clean render. It is a bit odd that there really is no focal point for me. In some ways the architecture is a bit flat in design. The little bushes in between the driveways look a bit odd.

    • RE: Any pointers for rendering?

      Mike,

I think you are off to a good start. What your missing are the small details. Things like baseboard, light switches, power outlets, etc can really pull a render together. The coffee table is way out of scale. The tv, I think because of its distorted scale, becomes the overall focal point. It draws your eye until you can figure out what is going on with it. What the render is really missing is a quality ambient occlusion. I also think the large sculpture is out of place. Like I said it is a good start but has a ways to go. What has helped me is looking at interior design magazines and studying what makes a nice interior image.

      fabiorossi,

If you have not looked into Autodesk Showcase I would give it a try. It is really pretty straight forward. It will import FBX and dwg as well as many other engineering based formats. I have attached some of my more recent work using showcase. The Ram interiors and SLS have no post work done. The SRT8 Jeep has very little. These were not modeled in Sketchup (used Modo for most of it) although I wanted to show the capabilities of Showcase.

Something I notice your missing (that makes a big difference) is the panel gaps. Still not floor so the car still seems to float. I have attached one of my recent renders of the new 2012 SRT8 Jeep. I went for a dark environment but not black which helps to ground the vehicle.

      Ogan,

Yep there is very little headlamp glass reflection. They changed the headlamp inners so much they actually wanted them seen very clearly (without much reflection) much to my disagreement 😉

I would say you are well on your way and you know what needs to do done next. Looking forward to watching the progress of your work.

I have to agree with Tom. The materials are holding this image back as is the lighting. The bed looks completely fake as well. The mattress looks like a box with a sheet over it.

The modeling is well done. The rendering is good but could be better. With the environment and background being black it give no shadow to the ground which makes the car look like it is floating. I understand the style you are after but even a slight ground shadow can make a huge difference.

      Sepo,

The differences between last year and this year are somewhat minimal. Mostly in file organization but very little in the render engine. I could have rendered the same results for the Mercedes with 2011 as I did with 2012. Showcase does take some getting used to in how the materials are set up and how the environment affects them. I do not have any files that I can share at the moment, most of what I have done is owned by a customer and in turn I can not share it. Showcase comes with 3 decent sample files that show the basic abilities of showcase. As with any software, it is going to take some investment in learning the process. If you need help or have questions send me a message as I would be more than happy to help. Once you get your feet wet with Showcase I think you will like it.
