    • Parametric Resizing Question

I am new to this software so pardon me if I don't use the right terminology in describing what I want to get done.

I have a cabinetshop. I would like to produce a library of different types of cabinets.
For example, I would like to have drawer banks, sink bases, wall cabinets etc.

I saw something similar to this in a tutorial about drawing windows.
In that example they use the OFFSET tool to produce a 3 inch frame around the glazing.

In my case I would like to have 2 inch frame around my cabinet doors.
A 12 inch wide door would, for example, have an 8 inch inset panel (12 minus 2 minus 2)

If I store this cabinet door in a library can I bring it out of the library and resize it to 18 inches?
If I do this will the 2 inch offset stick? I.e. Could I resize the door to 18 inches and end up with a 14 inch inset panel (18 minus 2 minus 2)?

    • Bozo question about MOVE tool

This a complete bonehead question but I am stymied so I have to ask it.

In the beginning tutorial you draw a basic house shape.
      The steps are:

      1: Draw a rectangle
2: Pull the rectangle into a cube
3: Bisect the rectangle with a line from midpoint to midpoint
4: Select the line with the arrow tool (turns the line blue)
5: Lift the roof with the MOVE tool.

In 8 out of 10 attempts all the MOVE tool does is shift the position of the blue line laterally.
Only every now and then does it actually lift the two planes that would constitute a roof.

Do I need to burn incense to make this happen consistently?
I am using a 3 wheel wireless mouse on a Mac Book Pro with the current free version of sketchup.

Any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong?
Do I need to move the line from the center? Do I need to select the move tool with the M key?
Why would this fail so consistently?
