You're right! I went through the graphics settings in VMplayer and I had an option set that is normally used for DirectX9 (accelerate 3D graphics). One I turned that option off, my guides appeared.
I wouldn't have thought to change graphics settings as I could see some (vertical) guides, thanks for the suggeestions.
While not perhaps a supported option, I've found Skectchup at various levels to work very well under VMware. Mind you, I'm not exactly a power user!

I can see those vertical guides but not the (many) horizontal ones. This would indicate that it's not a graphics driver/card issue - I assume I wouldn't see any dotted lines.
I guess I was hoping that someone would say 'You dummy, you need to select option X!'
I just had a closer (actually first) look at the screen shot I provided and noticed the horizontal lines do appear. Doh!
I have windows 8 under VMware for Fusion 360 so I might try installing Sketchup on that to see if it makes a difference.

Some further details on my system.
I'm running Sketchup Pro 2016 16.0.19911 32 bit on Windows 7 under VMplayer under Linux (Ubuntu 16.04)
VMplayer is a recent replacement for VMware Wprkstation.

I'm running Sketchup Pro 2016 under Windows 7.
I can't create horizontal guides but I can create vertical guides (see attached)
I've checked everywhere I can think of to enable guides, the fact that the vertical ones show up would seem to indicate that guides are not turned off somewhere.
It did work fine but I haven't used Sketchup or the computer for some months if that's relevant.
I've searched for similar problems and none of the answers given have any effect. I do have a few extensions installed but I've tried with them disabled and the problem is still present.
