Hi everyone, I've had plenty of request to make a tutorial showing how I typically integrate a SketchUp model into an environment when I doing concept visuals for film. I'm posting the link and trailer I made for it here, let me know your thoughts and any questions, I have more tutorials lined up and will be looking to cover any topics raised in these....

      Thanks for your support

    • Model for Mech Tutorial

Hi everyone, here's my latest work, I've been making a video tutorial to take you through my workflow from 2D concept, SketchUp modelling, Keyshot rendering and Photoshop compositing for a finished visual. I thought I'd share some grabs of the SU model and some quick camo test renders. I'll be cheeky and post the tutorial link here too if anyone is interested in seeing it, I've also made a short trailer which you can check out too, hope it like it and find it useful if you download it.

      Thanks

    • Mech Tutorial - Remote Weapon System

Hi everyone, its been a while since I posted anything here and usually it was in the gallery but since then I've had allot of interest into my work flow and so I've recorded a video tutorial to take you through the creation of one of my mech designs all the way through to a finished visual in Photoshop.

      Here's the link http://www.gumroad.com/chrisrosewarne
The trailer for it I made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mSZXopTa4U

I'm just going to paste the description I wrote for it and upload the cover, let me know if you've found it helpful, I will be putting more of these out soon....

In this tutorial you will see one of my approaches for designing mech, hardware and props for feature films, from "Guardians Of The Galaxy" to the new Bond movie "Spectre" this workflow has proven to be a fast and efficient way to design and concept, not only for a 2D production visual but also with the intention of it being built for filming.

We begin by concepting a mech in Photoshop and I will show you the technique of working orthogonally with the aid of photo textures to generate a bold design with a strong and interesting silhouette. From here we will import the image into SketchUp where we will model the design in 3D, exploring forms and mechanics before rendering various finishes in Keyshot to composite in Photoshop for a final presentation visual.

This tutorial is aimed at intermediate users of SketchUp, but I have also included a an extra "Introduction to SketchUp" video that walks you through my modelling techniques.

      Tutorial includes:

Tutorial video (10 parts including an intro to SketchUp)

The original SketchUp model of the mech

Layered Photoshop file of final presentation visual

deaneau - Thank you, and thanks for posting my FB link, I should have done that. BTW, whats the notebook you were referring to? πŸ˜„

david_h - Yes these are good old SU models, the real time rendering program Keyshot is great as rendering SU models, better with product style objects, things get a little tricky with interior architecture stuff.... You can download a 2 week trial, its just drag and drop materials, super easy, but you have to break your model into groups to assign different materials. I'm planning on some Gumroad tutorials showing how to do this kind of tech and detailing very rapidly and using lots of components to shorten the work. This model was divided into three, and then each of those 3's are split into halves, so I actually only modelled a 6th of what you see (think that division correct...?) I used the Fredo Round Corner plugin loads to bevel almost every edge I make as its so fast to use and creates the edge shadows/highlights that are essential in making your model feel "real".... πŸ˜„

      Thanks again

Hi everyone! Finally managed to finish this mech, it's a trial run at my Gumroad tutorial, 2D concept to Sketchup model, Keyshot rendering and post work in Photoshop. Just have to find the time to sit down and record this stuff!
After a few renders I ended up finding some great images of the McClaren car factory interior, so slick and modern, looks like a lab, also after much experimentation with materials I ended up colouring the body this hot McClaren sports car orange, it really popped in the white lab and also lends a bit of an industrial robotic feel to it... I also experimented with some LCD grain to give a digitised look to a couple views which I really like.

Hope you like it, with any luck the next post will be about the tutorial! πŸ˜„

It's great to see another fellow concept artist in this forum.

Your design reminds me of some sci-fi conceptual models I did for a MMO called Defiance (there is also a tv series on SyFy channel).

      Cheers!

SRX - thanks, glad you enjoyed them, I started the model thinking about something that was just going to look great when photographed, play up the materials and interesting techy shapes.... I'm a concept artist in the film industry and couldn't show allot of my recent work so had to find some "me time" to get some cool stuff online to share. It's all rendered in Keyshot, a real time renderer that does wonders with nice SU models! πŸ˜„

    • Starfish Mech/ ROV sub

I was looking at some motorbikes last week and admiring the way the hard mechanics are complemented by the smooth glossy paintwork on the fiberglass body, certain areas are cut away to allow some engine parts to show, it left me with a feeling that I wanted to create something that had this seductive material combination, glossy plastic and hard machined metal... I started noodling ideas in my sketchbook and still had this tri-head mech design idea from before that I wanted to develop further so began to push this shape around, creating flowing panel lines to break up the fiberglass shells, and designing mechanical parts that would be repeated around a center - but what does the mech do....? This is probably the first time that I didn't have an idea but wanted to created interesting shapes to allow materials to be assigned and just look dam good when photographed! I created some sort of turbine elements and exhaust vents, so visually it implies some sort of flight/hovering function - a lab drone.....? Could be, I like that and it's very fitting in white, but I know I wanted to try some other colours, red is sexy, more of a nod to the Ducati bikes I was looking at, tried a yellow version and it reminded me of an ROV sub unit, so that was the theme of the environment paint up, couldn't resist putting a shark in there (Jaws still burnt into my brain from a childhood viewing...!)

      Hope you enjoy it!

Hi Everyone, thought I'd share my latest imagining.... πŸ˜„

I had the urge to make a robot for a scene involving a long corridor, strip lighting and reflections, I didn't know what it would be, just that it would make you feel a bit trapped and claustrophobic to look at it, I didn't want it to look like it was chasing you, only that it would ominously make its way towards you... no where to run..... So I started off with a quick sketch then jumped into PS, kit bashing some military equipment together to create new shapes, I came up with this 'V' shaped collar and tapered panelling in the sketch so I was keen to keep it, from here it was just a matter of making sense of what was connecting everything. I spent about two days in SketchUp with this one, I'm slowly building a library of parts and panelling that I can re-use to save time on the detailing and allow me to just concentrate on the shape and design, I knew it was going to me mostly back-lit so I wanted the silhouette to be interesting and strong.... I was looking at F-35 jets for the surface stealth panelling and colours and carried that over into the Keyshot renders, using a photo backplate and an HDRI that would be a close lighting match I came up with this scene, the blood and bullet holes were added to try and create a dramatic narrative - did the robot do that, or is it investigating...? I'll leave that to you to decide.

Hi everyone, I'm a bit of a newbie here but I've been rocking SketchUp for about 2 years now, I work in the film industry as a concept artist and SketchUp is pretty common in the art departments, I design allot of props with it and have just started using Keyshot to render out the model and follow up with some post work in Photoshop, usually painting the prop into the scripted scene or just breathing some life and drama into it. So I thought I'd share a batch of recent personal work and of course include grabs of the raw model to go with the visuals...

Hope you like them! There's more on my blog
