    • Modelling a big boat from reality.

      I am not a newbie to SketchUp. So I am looking for some more advanced advice on the following problem.

      I am looking for a technique that would allow me to make a model of a boat which is lying in water. It is a small barge size L23m xW3,2m xH(above water line)2,75m xD(under)0.9m.

      It is a living boat and it is going to be renovated. I will be surveying it next month. I need a more or less exact model which would allow me to design the interior and exterior too. Any ideas how to bite that bit? To get more or less exact hull etc. to make a design on the basis of the model?

      Switching of a layer or hiding the object will not prevent intersecting - depending on the option of intersect which you use. If you don't want to delete the shape, move it away with some kind of position marker (a line) or if want to keep it in place hide it indeed. The intersect behaviour seems perfectly normal as you can see that the new object indeed intersects with the inner set of planes. In x-ray mode there are two layers of planes visible, am I right?

      Try grouping the elements (the ones to intersect) separately (from those you don't want to intersect) with the option to hide objects outside of the group (view>component edit>hide rest of the model). Now, once you've done that it should allow you easier operation within the desired set of objects. You should try options "intersect with context" & "intersect with selection".

      Delete the initial shape before intersecting. You can easily select it by double/triple clicking - check what it does. You can also easily remove multiple lines with the eraser tool. Click and hold to erase more...

      Whatever it is you need to render if you are after quality check out maxwell render. It integrates with sketchup. So you can particularly set everything up and just hit "render". However renders take long.

      Try "use maximum texture size" in window > preferences > OpenGL.

      It can be just right with the rotate tool. You only need to be careful with snapping to points, directions etc. Draw a flat plane, bring your objects to intersect with it and rotate with the intersection line as axis.
