Added a rather bland looking side, Planks are abit to dark, ill still be getting it right ,parts are all coloured and ready for texturing.

Hey guys, After learning how to map properly ive come up with this little lady, shes 6000 polys and uses 1 2048x2048 texture, shes taken 3 days so far, loading time is instant and there is almost 0 change in fps`s in game when she is loaded, in the scene shown below there are 14 boats loaded, the fps went from 50 without them to 40fps with the boats loaded. The current texture has some Grafiti on it as a test so dont worry, its not staying there πŸ˜› .

      http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6010/5933361272_3181a28561_b.jpg

Ive added the side texture here if any of you would like to have a shot at texturing it,I will be texturing all the little bits as I go along, the texture givin here is the AO map and can be set to "Multiply" in photoshop thus giving you the shading over your applied texture, it can also create the alpha clipping to keep it neat and tidy. Send me the texture Via pm and Ill pop it on with a screenshot to follow, and if its awesome, I might just use it on the final release πŸ˜„ ,Ive added a drawing so you can see whats going on there, just set it as a overlay in photoshop ,I use gimp but they are practically the same, apart from the cost.

Heres a little Forklift I made this morning, took 2.5 hours. Modeled in Sketchup ,mapped in 3ds max and textured in gimp. 1800 polys and all animateable, all parts share 1 2048x2048 texture. Will be finding a scene for it soon πŸ˜„

Finally Traced my guy who will make the 2 piece mould for me with 2 hulls ( Friend of mine would like a copy ) ,been spending alot of time designing the Crane area in the Bow, Alot more complicated than I had initially thought, Still have to think on it to see if I can get it any simpler than this.

Great Work Tadema, just a few things Ive noticed.

The headrails,The victory has 3 including the main top one,you have 4 and they are quite unaccurate, I know how hard they are to get correct but it is one of the most distinctive areas on these ships and is well worth the time spent in getting it 100%.

The Masts all seem a little short and thin, the main mast main yard on the real victory extends over the side almost 50% of the ships width on ither side.

Some of the most important Lower Standing Rig lines are missing, Will you still be adding them later?

Overall it looks great,Id love to see the figurehead and the sterncastle πŸ‘

    • RE: Hopper Dredger "Crane"

The hull is just a plug ready for fiberglassing, my contact who used to do the fiberglassing for me is MIA so Ill have to find someone else to make the mould.
The real ship has Hopper gates that dump the sand at the dump sites, my model will see the entire Hopper come out manually and dump by hand I wasnt about to try making those 16 hopper gates work.
Note this is my first scratch build and only my second scale model, and my first time using Styrene, but im loving it and styrene with claritie glue is definatly the only way to go, such a pleasure to work with.
The first pic shows the prints in scale made in scetchup from the model. All the smaller details dont get printed as I just take the measurements from Sketchup directly.

      Thanks BryanK,

Yup the other where not involved in Sketchup so not really relevant for this forum πŸ˜›

First Layer of Filler applied and sanded, stil have lots more sanding to do,only have 2mm balsa planks so have to be carefull when sanding with a machine to not go to far, tricky areas get sanded by hand.
Designed the hopper and made it from 1.5mm Styrene, still working on the supports but I think this Idea will pass, once the hopper is filled you will be able to lift it out and dump the contents, unlike the real ship that has hopper gates on the bottom, my hopper is 20mm from the bottom, also after doing some calculations im going to oversize the grab abit , it should take about 50 full scoops to fill the hopper.

Well after sitting 2 weeks without nails I finally got some, they are special brass artisania nails and there where none in the country!
So work on the Real models continues, I have the motor, coupling and shaft ready but its still some time before those go in, the hull is still being prepared for filling, which will be followed by a few layers of resin, then of to fiberglassing she goes, then everything you see in these pics will be destroyed πŸ˜„

Work on the Model has finally begun,I decided on a scale of 1:40 which brings her overall length to 1.33m. The Hull Blueprints which where made in Sketchup from the Original Drawings, where printed onto a A0 page and Stuck onto a 1.8m x 1.0m .6mm Sheet of Plywood using woodglue, and then painfully cut out using a jigsaw cutter :

This is the same process when making a ship in sketchup, and its just as much fun! ....although the copy and paste buttons are disabled in real life.
