What is the best way to install SU updates?
I find I have version 7.0.8657. If I check for updates I see there is a newer version. I can of course download it. Is it the complete new version or just the updates?
Should it be installed in a new folder leaving the old version intact? I really don't want to mess up any of my settings, plugins etc. So many questions!

      caddict,

You can install multiple simultaneous versions of SketchUp as long as the major version number is different. That is to say, SketchUp 6 and 7 can both be installed simultaneously, in separate folders.

However, if you download an update such as 7.0.10247, or in the future, 7.1, etc., that installer will replace the existing version of SketchUp 7 that is already on your machine. There is no way to do it differently.

We do not presently provide incremental or "patch" updates. Any time you download an updated version of SketchUp, you get the whole brand new installer. Although it takes more time to download, it's advantageous for you because it means you only ever have to keep one file around to do a complete reinstall and you don't have to worry about installing things in the proper order. It's also advantageous to us because managing patch updates is one of the most tedious and aggravating tasks in software engineering.

      I hope that helps.

      Chris,

It would help to know the exact text of the whole message, as well as which importer you were trying to use at the time. And are we talking Free or Pro?

i often get a bugsplat when closing SU and sometimes get an error message saying not enough room in TEMP folder. does anyone have a solution? PS before you ask i have 170gig free space on my HD. πŸ˜‰

      xrok,

Please install the M1 update and let us know if you continue to see BugSplats upon exit. If so, I'll forward your message on to QA for further analysis.

Some folks are irked that M1 didn't fix their "pet-peeve" bug, but we did fix over 120 bugs in that update, including the most frequent BugSplat-causing offenders, so there is a good chance we solved your problem.

Even if we didn't solve that particular issue yet, rest assured that we do pay close attention to the number of bug reports that come from BugSplat; after all, that's why we use it!

But now I have SU6(pro) and SU7(free) installed, by default clicking on an SU file will open it in SU7. Is there any way to change that so that by default it opens in SU6?
      Jon

      Jon,

I'm bummed to hear you'd rather use SU6 for your skp files than SU7; hopefully one day we'll have made enough changes to convince you to move to 7. 😎

In any case, it is straightforward to modify this. Every file extension is associated with a corresponding program with which it should be opened. You simply need to change the association for skp files from SU7 to SU6.

This article has decent (generic) coverage of the issue.
      http://www.nirmaltv.com/2008/07/26/how-to-set-default-file-associations-in-vista/

They use csv files as an example. Remember that you're looking to change skp files.

      I hope this helps.

I will look into this issue and let you know what I find.

In the meantime, please download and install Google SketchUp Pro 7. If you decide not to purchase the upgrade, it will revert to "free" after an 8-hour trial period. I do not think you will have any problems installing SketchUp Pro 7 alongside Google SketchUp Pro 6. They were meant to work together without incident.

I spoke with the developer who created the Windows installer and we looked into the issue. It is implemented and working as intended.

SketchUp 6 and 7 can absolutely be installed and work side-by-side without any problems. This is because each one uses a different unique ID when we check for previous installations.

The only explanation for the behavior you are seeing is that at some point in the past (even if you've since forgotten about it!), you have already installed the SketchUp Pro 7 trial. Apparently you have now downloaded the installer for SketchUp 7 (Free) and are trying to install that over top of your existing SketchUp Pro 7 installation. This is not allowed, so you get the pop-up message indicating as much. If you have decided against buying the SketchUp Pro 7 product and you want to install the free version, that's OK, but you must first uninstall the Pro 7 version before running the free installer.

The alternative is that instead of uninstalling/reinstalling, you can simply use the updated Pro 7 installer. The Pro product is engineered to revert to free functionality if you do not license it, and then its behavior is identical to that of the free product. Installing with the Pro installer and running in trial mode will give you exactly the same behavior as you would have seen if you installed the free product directly.

Again, we are confident that this has nothing to do with SketchUp 6 already being installed, as its unique ID is completely different. Go to the Control Panel and look at "Add and Remove Programs" and I am sure you will find that SketchUp Pro 7 is already installed on your machine.

      Hi everyone,
You are right. We had a bug with the website for about 6 hours yesterday that incorrectly reported an update was available when it was not. Sorry you all ran into it. It should be fixed now, but let us know if you see anything that looks wrong.
      Best regards,
      Tricia

      SketchUcation users,

If you saw the upgrade dialog on Monday, it was a mistake. If you see it today, it is intended!
Please help yourself to SketchUp 7.0 Maintenance Release 1 (English only) at http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/gsu7/download.html.
After upgrade, versions will read as 7.0.10247 (Win) and 7.0.10248 (Mac).

      Enjoy!

      All,

Calroy contacted me privately and we spent some time looking into the issue. Based on the crash data, we are confident that the problem he is having is specific to the configuration of his machine, but we are unable to either reproduce or rectify it on our end. So far, we have not had any other reports of this specific issue.

If anyone out there encounters this same behavior, please post here and let us know.

      Thanks!

      Calroy,

Next time you get the error, copy the entire text of the report it sends to Apple and send it in a private message to me. I'll take a look and see if I can figure it out for you.

After that, try reinstalling the application just in case something went wrong during the original installation.

    • RE: How to get Finder (Mac) to display preview of .Skp file

      Hi, geomp,

Quick Look support is not available in SketchUp 7.0

While it is theoretically possible to display any file type in Quick Look, to do so requires the application developer to create a plugin using the Quick Look API that essentially teaches Finder how to display .skp files.

We are aware of users' desire to do this, but are sorry to say that SketchUp does not support the feature at this time.
