I'm not sure this is a bug or just something I don't understand. I often use the Follow Me tool to extrude a face along a complex curved line. Sometimes this works like a charm and sometimes the dreaded "This does not appear to be a valid path" dialog appears. I haven't been able to identify a pattern. Can anyone explain why this happens and how to avoid it? Thanks, Fred

Well, it is hard to tell for every case is a different one. Sometimes it gives this notification but stilll does the extrusion correctly.

There are certainly some oddnesses in its behaviour and improving this very important tool would add greatly to sketchup.

          Hey Fred,

The next time you come across this, will you please post the model so I could take a look at it?

          Thank you.

            Hi Fred,
I have found working on small measurements that the follow me and intersect with model tool do not work effectively.

My solution is to build the model, group it, then scale up x10 or 100 and it works a treat.
I then scale down again when the operation has been completed.

            cheers
            Alan.

              Brad,

I placed three files in a zip file at the bottom of this page. The zip file is called follow_me_problem_files. These were the files I used to create the three long horizontal curved shapes in the image below. Each one gave me problems. The first worked from one end but not the other. The 2nd and 3rd had to be done in stages. I'd love to know how to avoid this.

Alan, I'm usually working at fairly large scales but I'll give your method a try. Should have done it yesterday but I forgot. Definitely will next time. Thanks for the suggestion!

              Fred
