Applying imported textures on rounded objects
-
Hi
My Question may be quite trivial, however I couldn't find a suitable way so far:When I import a picture as a texture, and make it fit to an object (using the pins) it works well as long the surface is flat, thus one surface. So if there is a rounded object, the surface is broken up into some smaller ones, visible by dashed Lines. This is due to the geometry I guess, but it doesn't let me fill in more than one of the parts at once.
Is it impossible to put on an imported picture (texture) to the whole rounded surface or is the a way to remove / ignore the dashed borders?

Turn off hidden geometry (H key) before applying the texture, you might be interested in http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?p=3949#p3949

Guys,
Note that textures are usually applied on faces tiled (by default). This means that applying them on a round surface will start the tiling on each facet that the rounded surface is made up of.
To "wrap" an image around a curved surface, you have to
- turn on hidden geometry
- then apply teh texture only on one of the facets,
- right click and go down to "Texture"
- there choose "Position" (do not do any positioning though) and
- hit Enter.
- now turn off hidden geometry,
- sample the painted image with the eyedropper tool (Alt+Paint)
- apply it onto the whole, curved surface.
Obviously, if the image size is different from the surface size, it may look ugly. Therefore you may want to size the image foirst like in this example where I first made a single face with exactly the size of the surface of the cylinder, applied and scaled the texture to my needs, did the right click / positioning still there and then sampled the image and applied on the cylinder (column).
The example Rodentpete provided is even more difficult for there the curved surface curves in 3D and the scaling and sampling of the image is a bit more tedious but with a little experimenting you will be able to accomplish that as well.

Thanks a lot for your help, now, it works!
