Component saves different view

How can I get my components to save to the same view that I create them in? I create a component in front view, then when I go to open it to use it the component box shows the component in top view. Can't really tell what the component is in the that view. What am I doing wrong?

I think it might have to do with the glueing plane? i've never been very good at this part, but make sure your glueing plane is set correctly in the component. Maybe could you post an example here and we can look at it. Someone else might have a single definitive answer, but I don't so I'd need to play with the model for a little bit.

I believe this is the refresh save thumb nail option...
open the file that is your component
go to Window > Model Info > File > Redefine Thumbnail on Save check box...
now go to your component viewer and browse to the directory and see if its changed...

make and save a file with the component in front view (Preferably use the zoom extends tool to display all the component in your screen), then select the component and open the component window and select the In Model option in drop box, then right click on the thumbnail and choose Reload and answear Yes and choose the name of the file that you save from the begininng.

If I may ask another question about components, How can I get my components to save to a folder I have designated for them? I have been to preferences and changed the address to what I want, but no matter what I do, any component I make seems to go to my c drive/program files/atlast/ sketchup. It will not take the directions I choose. ThanksRG

Well, within your sketchup folder there is a components folder. There you can make your custom folder say "My components". Then whatever you create, you can just copy there with any file manager or from within SU (v.6) by opening your secondary selection pane in the component browser (that little + sign under the close button) and simply drag any of your components "In model" into your new folder.
Of course you can have several custom folders as well as subfolders etc.
In SU5 there is not this latter option (I'm saying this for the path you provided resembles more to the one of v.5)

Wow, well ok then, let me see if I understand this. Since I have sketchup 5 there is nothing I can do about this? Correct?
Otherwise the complexity of this is a bit much for me, since I don't have the little plus sign you talk about.

No, what I said you don't have this latter (SU6) option.
You can always open two files at the same time and copy/paste components from one into the other.
You can also save a single component as an skp file (after all all components are skp files) and copy your such files where I said: the component folder within the "root folder" of your SU application (regardless of the version).
Then you can load them into any file from your built in component browser in SU.BTW why don't you upgrade? Both versions can run simultaneously on the same machine and (so far - still) it is free.

Ok sorry, I didn't quite follow all the directions you gave. What I did was go to my main sketch up file and to components and created a new folder called my components, now I moved all my component files into that folder. seems to take me right where i want to go now, so I thank you, but I still feel the preference option should take me to my separate file I created in my documents folder. I like to keep all my shetch up files there because I am using 2 pcs and I can put that folder on a stick and take it to my other pc when I need to. In doing this all my material and components are there for me to use regardless of which pc I am working at...

Yeah, that seems to be a good reason. However you could create a shortcut to the components folder under su as a workaround though that would practically mean some extra clicks when moving stuff.

I don't remember exactly how it works in v5 (I can check at home where I still have it installed later today if needed). But you should be able to change the path under preferences to the location of where you would like to save components by default. Then in the Component browser you should be able to add that location to the list of folders shown. It's just that easy in v6 and I thought it was about the same in version 5, though I could totally be wrong.

No Chris, you are completely correct. I have that option in sketchup 5, but whenever I try to make the change in preferences to my special folder, sketchup does not follow my instruction. It seems no matter where I direct the components to go, they end up in the sketchup folder in my PROGRAM FILES. I hope I have been clear here. If not please ask and I will try to explain what is happening. Its the best way I can explain what is happening. I never had an experience like this with any other program I have ever used. It seems like sketchup has a mind of its own......Ray
