Different colors on my house trim (?)
-
Hi All:
Just started playing with SU 6 (free), and I'm hooked. I'd like to put together a model of my house and see what it will look like with different colors on the trim, windows, doors, porch columns, etc. Naturally I don't want to have to select every piece and set it's texture individually - I'd like to define the model such that I can make the color change in one place and have all the elements in that category change (i.e. all windows, or all soffits). Items in the categories will not be the same size and shape obviously. What's the best way? Components? Groups? Layers?
I'm thinking that I'll use groups, but I'm the newest of newbies here. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks!

Marc,
If you right click a material in the "in model" page of the materials browser, and select "select": all of the faces of that material will be selected...so you only have to paint one of the faces to paint them all.
But...it won't select faces inside groups (or other groups if you are inside a group). So (because I usually group stuff by "story") I always have to do the above a few times (inside the roof group, each story group, etc.) Also, if I have enough like windows and doors to use components, each will require going through the process too.
Still...one face per is pretty fast, since you mostly don't have to orbit to find an easy one to hit.

Hey Marc, I'm a noob too, but I discovered that if you use the same material on each of the different parts (trim white, walls light grey, floors dark grey, etc.) [yes it will be ugly with those colors] but when you click on the colors in "materials in model" and select "edit" as you change the color using the color wheel and sliders, they change in the model at the same time! I don't know if it does this when there are groups or componants though.

Thanks to All for the input. Yes, Materials is the way to do this. Materials seem to work as expected when applied to faces in groups and components as well.

Marc,
You could use different Materials for each respective color entity (trim, sofit, etc.). So for example, let's say you start with the Material "Color_000" (that's just a standard white). Create a new material from it (see attached) and name it descriptively (i.e. trim). Create a new material like this for each item and name them descriptively. Now when you've completed your model and applied materials to the appropriate faces, you can just go back to your materials palette and make changes to the desired parts.
As far as using groups and components, I would recommend putting all of your trim into a group so it's easy to select just the trim if you want to (open the group and "select all"). That way, applying materials will be easy too.
