Graphics Card Problem

Well, i can't work with sketchup with my new graphics card anymore.. I had NVDIA 6500 GT. And it worked really good with. But now with 8600 GT which you may think would perform better, i'm having messed up graphics, freezing issues etc.. I have the latest drivers. How may i fix this?

Have you tried with older drivers? Sometimes new drivers brake stuff that worked before.
Does the problem only occur in SketchUp, or in other programs as well?

Please, add more details (like OS and such - do you have Vista for instance? What computer is it?) until someone who can help more happens on this thread.

The 8000 series cards are ready for DirectX 10. By any chance did you upgrade to that? The video drivers for openGL rendering under DirectX 10 are in their infancy. Try going back to DirectX 9.
To test for DirectX performance: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Information > Tools > DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
Adjust hardware acceleration in SU. Is acceleration set to be controlled by the program?
Is this a hardware upgrade? If so, you may have to adjust your BIOS, maybe even update other system chip drivers. But take it easy on unnecessary driver upgrade and flashing the BIOS stuff. Go to the download section for your motherboard. Go easy on this. Much of it may be unnecessary.
Go back to technical support at NVidia and see if they have some knowledgebase info/advice on configuring a happy system. Is your power supply adequate? All your parts have to play together nicely - RAMs, CPU, XP, BIOS, software, hardware, etc.
Have you maintained your HD for optimal performance?
Keep a record of your system 'improvements' encase you have to undo anything.
Each computer is a unique beast. Google can't control for that.

Well, now i'm glad my sketchup works perfectly. How?
For all those who has, directx10 compatible graphic cards, all you have to do is to make sure that your antialising settings are set to "let the application choose". That's all. No glitches no absurd graphics.

well guys.. i think that the problem.. is the driver series 169.*.. because.. with these deries of driver, i've many problem with the graphic in sketchup.. with the WHQL 163.75.. no problem.. but this is a shame.. because the new nVidia ForceWare, solve many problem with the latest game and software..
Anyone... has the same problem??

i just add ATI Radeon HD2600 to my computer, spec: microsoft windows XP professional version 2002 service pack 2, pentium D CPU 2.8GHZ, 2.50 GB of RAM. i had problem orbiting the heavy model before i got the card. now it's another issue, orbiting is fine but when i select the entity, i can't grab what i want.
i tried setting up the anti-alias thing to let the application control, i tried download the latest driver for the graphic card. it didn't help. what should i do? buy a new graphic card? which one would work best ? i do not render, just modelling. anything that makes me orbiting the 50 M file smoothly would be great.
help or suggestion would be appreciated. i'm not a computer guru and need to finish the project i'm working on within this week. thank you.

i tried that, still no improvement. now thinking about buying new card, but don't know which to buy, something that suits my demand. i don't want to pay too much for what i don't really need and also don't want to waste money buying something that doesn't work. i am living in thailand. tomorrow will go look for options. i'm not sure if the salesperson would be able to help me pick the right card....

As a general guide:
ATI cardsare not quite so well supported as nvidia cards, although some of them work fine it can be a bit hap hazard.
Nvidia 7000 cads are generally a pretty safe bet.
Nvidia 8000 cards are pretty safe as well, altohugh i tink there has been a few issues with the 8800gt card, this has probably been resolved, though.
Nvidia 9000 cards are probably ok, altohugh i dont really know as i dont know anyone whos got one.
Nvidia quadro fx cards are a very safe bet, although they are expensive. -

Before giving up, you could also try unchecking the "enable Fast Feedback" option in the SU Window>Preferences>OpenGL pane. This will have a minimal effect on SU performance, but the display remains much faster than if you turn off the whole "Hardware Acceleration"

If I use my old 6800GT to power my other monitor all OpenGL apps becomes dead slow. But running both monitors of the 8800GT and everything is quick and snappy.

thank you very much all. i took my hard drive to the shop where i bought the card. it's not only the issue with SU. my audio system didn't work, i suspected that it's due to the new card i just installed. my assumption was right. the mainboard driver and ATI Radeon driver were conflicted (my hd is HP a5080l. the guy in the store let me change the ATI with the new card. i chose GeForce8500 after reading what's written here regarding the graphic card. it's not expensive, i paid about US$70. tweak a bit in the open GL option, tick the last line to be 4x. it works alright now.

Herwiberden, I'm glad to hear about your success. Motherboard problems forced me to get a new computer. I now have a EV GA nVidia Ge Force 8600 GTS 512 MB GPU. A few negative reports made me gun-shy about DirectX 10. So I only allowed DirectX 9 to be installed for now.
XP Pro SP is still available for new set-ups. Vista OS along can cause another set of 'problems'. CAD people have reported problems with saving files among other things... But I digress...
Orei, I have driver version 6.14.11.5827 for the nVidia and it seems to work on my new system. But I also was happy with my Radeon x1950 Pro on my older, sick computer - with a few less visual abnormalities. That worked very well with my use of SU too. Video cards are only one part of a computer. All parts - hardware and software - have to play together nice. In Heriberden's case here, that only involved checking a little box.

I'm running SketchUp on a geforce 9600GT. Everything runs perfect as long as I don't turn anti-aliasing on. Which is unfortunate because I think it looks so much better if it's turned on. The problem that I run into is the display works fine, and I can orbit; but as soon as the hold down the left mouse button the SU display goes crazy. I don't know if anyone has yet solved this issue.
My setup is:
WinXP
AMD Quad-core
2GB RAM
geforce 9600GT 523MB
ASUS M3A mobo
dual monitors (I only mention this because I read somewhere that a dual monitor setup can screw up anti-aliasing)-Andrew

Cheers for the heads up alexander. Have you downloaded the latest drivers? there were some new ones released recently, might hep with your AA problem.
