Graphics Card Problem
-
Herwiberden, I'm glad to hear about your success. Motherboard problems forced me to get a new computer. I now have a EV GA nVidia Ge Force 8600 GTS 512 MB GPU. A few negative reports made me gun-shy about DirectX 10. So I only allowed DirectX 9 to be installed for now.
XP Pro SP is still available for new set-ups. Vista OS along can cause another set of 'problems'. CAD people have reported problems with saving files among other things... But I digress...
Orei, I have driver version 6.14.11.5827 for the nVidia and it seems to work on my new system. But I also was happy with my Radeon x1950 Pro on my older, sick computer - with a few less visual abnormalities. That worked very well with my use of SU too. Video cards are only one part of a computer. All parts - hardware and software - have to play together nice. In Heriberden's case here, that only involved checking a little box.

Nvidia 9000 cards are probably ok, altohugh i dont really know as i dont know anyone whos got one.
I'm running SketchUp on a geforce 9600GT. Everything runs perfect as long as I don't turn anti-aliasing on. Which is unfortunate because I think it looks so much better if it's turned on. The problem that I run into is the display works fine, and I can orbit; but as soon as the hold down the left mouse button the SU display goes crazy. I don't know if anyone has yet solved this issue.
My setup is:
WinXP
AMD Quad-core
2GB RAM
geforce 9600GT 523MB
ASUS M3A mobo
dual monitors (I only mention this because I read somewhere that a dual monitor setup can screw up anti-aliasing)-Andrew

Cheers for the heads up alexander. Have you downloaded the latest drivers? there were some new ones released recently, might hep with your AA problem.

Dear All,
I have a colleague who has downloaded Sketchup on to his PC, but cannot make it work.
He writes:
"I have just revisited Sketchup and remember why I didn't get very far last summer. As soon as I begin, by clicking on Instructor (or anywhere on the site for that matter) it freezes and says 'not responding'."
I suggested that he uninstall aNd reinstall, but this didn't work. Is this a graphics card problem, and if so, what should he do?
Kind regard,
Bob

@ Alexander
Try this, alexander: go to the seting panel of the driver for the video card, find AA settings and make sure it is set to "application controlled" (or similar - I don't have an nVidia card t the moment).
I1m not sure it helps, just gessing.
@ Bob,
Is he using Vista? I have herad such problems with Vista OS and freshly installed SU (where the tutorial and instructor or what windows pop up automatically).
The workaround is supposed to be to start SU by opening an existing file and not by the SU icon (or Start menu or whatever).
If he hasn't got a SU file yet, he can copy one from the /Resources/en-US/Templates folder (I think that's the path).
Tell him to try this first. If he can start SU this way, it is the same problem and I think I've read a fix for it somewhere since this tip.

Im not sure if this would work, but you could try right clicking the SU icon->properties then there should be an option to run it in xp comaptability mode.
Worth a try at least.

Dear Remus and Gaieus,
I have emailed Felix to ask him to email me his system and computer details.
I will also email him my own start-up template so that he can follow the posted instructions.
Thank you both for your help.
Kind regards,
BobPS Felix is a cabinet maker and so I will suggest that he joins the Forum at some stage. The more woodworkers the better.

Dear Gaieus and Remus,
I quick update on my last post.
Felix emailed me to say that it is now working. He was indeed running Vista, but he didn't say which of the suggested fixes worked.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,

I installed a second video card, and now Sketchup consumes 1/2 of my quad-core CPU.
My solution is to only use one video card during use of Sketchup.
I found that if I reduce my desktop from 4 monitors to 2 (just one video card in use), then start Sketchup, it performs normally.Hope that helps.

nVidia?
I had a Geforce 6800 GT and I installed a Geforce 8800 GT and found that my OpenGL application all dropped performance. DirectX powered applications worked fine. Apparently it's a drive issue.
