I dont really know how to ask this in computer terms, so I think I have covered the same question 3 different ways, but I think they are basically the same.

If I have componenets in my library and have placed them in several SU jobs and I want to recatagorize my component library, like add new folders or sub catagory levels to my component library...Do the components placed before the reorganization still read or show up in the old instance if I move the parent to a new location?

Same question for rasters, if I place a raster in a SU file, then the location of the parent raster is moved, will this mess up the raster used in my SU file?

Are the instances of Components and rasters placed in a SU FIle, copies or do they reference the parent file location?

      Thanks

      Hank

        Speaking from my experience...

Once a component/image is in a model, it is part of the model and doesn't refer back to the parent file on the hard disk.

I have run a test, and I cant see a reference back to a parent either, I really need to do a cleanup, and I'd hate to wreck my system. I have a cad program that reads file locations and doesn't make copies, and it is easy to loose data after changing computers or file reorganization.

Jim is correct- you can do whatever you want to your component or bitmap folders and it won't affect SketchUp files which use those files. I've reorganised my components and materials libraries many times over the years and it's never caused a problem with SU files. In fact, when I suffered an HDD crash and lost almost everything I'd done I managed to recover a lot of components and materials by saving them back out of several SU models.

It's a simple feature which I LOVE about SU. I hate how other progs (notably Vue which I use a lot) screw up every time a path to a material texture or model is altered- it keeps file sizes down (fractionally), but it's a royal pain in the behind.

              Rhank,

Maybe you don't use it a lot, but 3D WareHouse could not exist if a SU model only "referenced" to a "remote" file in a "remote" folder.

              Gai...

Yep. Sometimes the most obvious direction to an answer is the last place we look. Hadn't dawned on me that the parts, pieces, textures and stuff must go with the file if it is transported, whether it be to the 3d warehouse, or simply attached to an email and sent to yourself so you can work on it on a different computer at a different place with another instance of SU running.

May all your dimensions be the sum of their total.
