excellent... I'll host anything if needed... I can make an open FTP server for us to dump in and then we'll review them for final changes...

this will be awesome... I can't wait to see Column week or Balustrade week...

I know this is stretching but it could even break into teams... or threads for each group of components

that's why I'm wanting to do this... I want to have the people without 170 bucks to blow... to have the tools to create professional models and renderings in a shorter amount of time.

I think that I've had the same idea as Coen. FF's bandwidth and storage capacity is limitless....we run our own servers. I'll ask around and see if it's technically possible to set up a resource (not the FF Exchange) that is entirely outside the FormFonts firewall and open to everyone, regardless of subscription.
I'm making no promises, but if it is possible, it might be fairly easy to copy the whole Exchange GUI into a new, free area that specifically services this forum. This means that not only would you be able to find stuff via links on these pages, but you could directly search the site as an independent resource....like the old Objective Networks. I'm sure those of you that are subscribers know how much easier it is to find stuff on FF than on the Warehouse.
Myself and others here might be able to keep an eye on the place and delete any junk that appears. I guess we could either make it completely open, or you'd have to log in using the same User/Pass that you have here...which would limit it to SketchUcation members only.

Given FormFonts' secret plans for the future, it might even be possible to host stuff like video and audio. You would probably be able to organise collections too, as you can at present.

As I say, I can't promise anything, because I'm not sure of the technical difficulties, but I'll make a few enquiries.

Yes, it does have a nice exclusive, cosy feel to it, doesn't it? My thoughts were that it would leave the resource less open to abuse (as in this thread) and prevent all the good stuff being buried under a torrent of garbage.

The 3D Warehouse already has a very good way to organize models. You can create collections of models, and then create collections of collections making a logical and easy-to-navigate hierarchy.

Maybe a SketchUcation account could be created and the password given to moderators, who would then control the contents of the submissions.

Here is an example of what the hierarchy might look like: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=3d206db5e11ff8c3c82ffa9bf7bce40b

You can include other people collections in any collection also, so maybe each individual is responsible for their own collection, and a moderator could add that persons collectiob to the SketchUcation collection.

                              Hi

                                Coen,

I found this thread late - hope it isn't too cold yet.

For your informal poll, I am a FormFonts subscriber and have found it to be a great resource and time saver.

I have quite a large collection of models and have organized them by categories, but still find it is difficult to pick from among the models in a category. Example, I have chairs divided into modern, traditional, office etc. but it still takes too much time to make an appropriate selection. I do like your though about Picassa as a model for organization where one can scan a large group of images at a larger scale and make an informed selection.

As for the old forum, it is almost impossible to find anything quickly by search as well as in the 3d warehouse specific objects are difficult to find quickly. A few months ago, on the old forum, Christian Foster started SU model depository as an answer to the forum and 3D-W confusion. It has a pretty good organization but didn't quite take off, coming as it did on the heels of the Google migration. The link to his model repository is below.

                                http://sketchup.computingforarchitects.com/about/

He hasn't shown up on on any of the forum in some time - hope he isn't discurouraged or burnt out.

I haven't been able to spend as much time as I would like helping out with SU issues, but really appreciate all of your efforts and of all the other regular contributors and will toss in my two cents when ever possible.

Hoping to be of some help -

Bandwidth means the amount of data that can be pushed or pulled through a communication port. Like a larger pipe can flow more water, more bandwidth can flow more data.

                                        Make sense?

I thought when someone was talking about more bandwidth they were reffering to something like this:

                                          http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/fatboys.jpg

Though I would not technically consider them a "Band".

                                            Hello all,

I just noticed a link through to the sketchup library from here and have read through the comments - I think there is a place for a repository aimed at more architectural (be it landscape, interior, commercial, domestic etc.) components that maintain a high quality.

My plan is currently to add some sort of download credit system where for every upload you make you get 25 or so downloads, and possibly add textures, styles, and maybe even scripts categories. I also want to add a "collections" feature to organize components into similar categories.

I'm really open to ideas so let me know what is wanted / needed and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to build it in. Also I am happy to make available bittorrent collections that can be downloaded in bulk, and also the entire collection as one. The functionality isn't too hard to add to the current site (http://sketchup.computingforarchitects.com) and we can arrange things into "approved" and other collections relatively easily using tagging.

                                            Cheers,

                                            Chris.
