Option to Save as default version (more compatibility to past versions)
-
Hi everyone,
To recap:
An option to set save as file format (can choose version you like)I was reading the release notes of version 2024 and didn't see this feature. So hoping on next updates, will make Sketchup file format behave like Adobe Photoshop's PSD in a sense that it can be opened by past versions. I am not talking about day zero version, at least can be opened by version in past 5 years or so. That's an arbitrary number to suggest but just trying to say it is sometimes annoying to hear requests from receipients that the file cannot be opened simply because I did an upgrade one step from previous. You know what I mean. Thanks!

@onzki Follow the link I post to the other sketchup forum. A SU wizard named Desmo has come up with a plugin to solve thisβ¦.

In the new format a file saved by a 2024 user can be opened by a current -2 Version. Meaning the new format is not year specific, it is simply a .skp file and can be opened by currently supported versions. So a 2024 save can be opened in 2023 and 2022 and possibly 2021.
The need for Dezmo's extension is in cases where you need to save as back to an earlier unsupported version. This has become necessary only since the release of 2024 which doesn't have the old save as back to year option.

@onzki You can also use @alsomar Old Save extension

Save your file in legacy SketchUp formats. Please note that if you save in older versions of SketchUp, the organization of tags into folders and other features implemented in later versions will be lost.

Hi everyone. Thanks all for sharing your ideas and solution.
I just discovered that 2024 is now versionless! Good, thanks Sketchup developers.
I guess this will apply to older versions after 2021.
I only tested with 2023 and it can open without issues. I dont have legacy programs anymore so I cannot comment about it.
