Been dipping my toe into unwrapping and texturing SubD created models outside of SU. It’s bringing up a few questions.
Before anyone mentions it I can’t use WrapR as I’m on a Mac. Some questions are….
When exporting the SubD model should I convert to plain mesh first ? Also can a proxy be exported. , mapped , brought back into SU and SubD maintain the mapping of the proxy ?

Yes, explode it apply a bitmap and export

Yes, the way to go would be to export PROXY to OBJ. Open in Blender, unwrap and export to OBJ. Then in SU use QFT OBJ Import to bring the model back in.
