Which version of SketchUp are you using? Your profile only indicates "Free/Make". Are you using a desktop SketchUp Make version of the free web version? Knowing that will help us figure out what tools you have available for modeling these things.

Years and years ago, (eons, probably) this guy was the master at making geodesic domes in sketchup. Just using native tools. He used to be active on sketchup forums, but that was so long ago. I only find him now on a site called DeviantArt. -
