There is no need to explode anything, open the spiral shape for editing, select the geometry and Intersect with model. This will place your cutting edge within the group.
Use the selection fence in the other direction to just above the cutting edge, this will select everything above the line but not the line itself or anything below, allowing you to either delete it or group it without effecting the geometry below. -
Yes. There is no need to explode. My bad habit. But I still got worse results & trash lines when deleting compared to make group & move? Here a little ugly intersection, but make group & move leaves less to fix. I did two groups -> editing the horn select all & intersect faces with model. Remove the circle plate. Edit the horn and select the upper part: "the delete" comes with trash, but with "the move" cleaner edges? Also select just above line does not give good selection results. I need to select over the line (white) when editing inside. Perhaps I'm missing something? Here is .skp if someone...

Oh! that reverse select I have totally missed. I don't know why. And for long time used groups for clean remove. I will unlist my tip now, it's more laborious or not necessary usually.

Select and group to delete is a very useful tool for quick clean up in various operations The point is the process will not remove edges that are needed for the remaining faces. I thought that was the point you were making.
in such a shape I would first soften all the edges with the soften/smooth window, then the selection of each half after the intersection is simple, there would only be two surfaces to select.

Yes. That was one point on the video. Still useful to use make group & delete after more complex selections etc.

It's one way of selecting things and isolating them.
But making a more relevant selection is far more efficient.
We all do things in different ways.

I quite disagree David. You apparently don't understand the point. It speeds up the process in most cases. Did you know that grouping avoids removal of edges for faces you want to keep and and makes selection simpler for editing complex shapes? It would have prevented the problem he was showing in the video.

I did understand the point but I don't see how it speeds up the process he was showing. I didn't group the selection in my example and I didn't have the problem he had either.
I also understand Box's point. Different strokes.
