[REQ] reveal solver
-
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction, or could create an extension that would facilitate the automatic resolution of reveals to doors and windows, let's call it wall openings.
At the moment we have one of two options when placing doors and windows in walls, make the opening first and place the door / window thereafter, or you have a component that cuts the opening, which is problematic when you have multiple skins in the creation of the reveal. Either way the reveal construction needs to be done manually, I am aware of a plugin by D.Bur for lintels / sills though.
Ideally I would like to see an extension that could facilitate:
- running either on it's own to create the opening and associated reveals with lintels and sills
- running of an extension (third party) within that would not only honor the outcomes of the 3rd party script, but then facilitate the creation of the reveals, lintels and sills.
Another way of doing this is probably to have a DC that have these pre-made, however the problem lies therein when you have multiple materials / skins making up the wall...
Thoughts...???
+++ EDIT +++
I realize that construction methods differ throughout the world, in my case a wetwork / brickwork construction is applicable; whereas the predominant construction method in America is that of drywalls being cladded, correct?

I suppose you have tryed the Flex Series and Click-Windows ?

Pilou, the point is not making the door / window, there are quite a number of different solutions for this. It is the formation of the opening with reveals and returns in brickwork, etc. as the case may be (depends on the amount of layers the wall consists of) and the automation / integration of this with an extension to do the doors / windows.

This is the main architectural issue we have with sketchup.
I usually follow the cutopening route, but it's not possible with wall layers and has many flaws when moving walls as windows shift positions.
Creating holes in walls and then inserting windows/doors is also troublesome as many openings are not simple pushpulls and if you have many, you can't change them swiftly.
Allowing for dynamic booleans would be a solution and fluid interactive has a pair of plugins that might work for you, if you work with solids:

Specially the bool extension might be very handy for you.
The other is even stronger as you have a lot of extra features, but it's also less direct if you want to achieve boolean operations fast.

Thanks JQL, I am aware of their products but didn't really imagine using it in such a manner. I sent them a message, but it seems as though it may not be too intuitive unless there is a lot of work on the integration / workflow side of things.

My thoughts exactly.
Maybe they could adapt them, I don't know. But I believe I could find a useful workflow with them, just right now I don't have the right project to test them with.

have you tried Face Cutter?
can you post an image and example .skp with your desired outcome...

I have used two cutting component for double skins, but that doesn't help for more than two surfaces.
I have experimented with creating portions of walls that have the openings complete inside and out. Join to other wall segments.
My lintels and sills always come with the door component, so I don't quite understand original post. Can you post an example?

Face cutter won't do the job. It's a different tool.

I'm not sure I understand your post correctly, as pbacot suggested, could you please post an example?
There is a Viz related video:

facecutter simply cuts through all the faces, it doesn't create the reveal returns (in terms of construction methodology) nor does it create the lintel and sill.

Really? I only know of Window+ that does the sill for you with the window, but not in terms of construction methodology though. What is it that you don't understand?
