I'm wondering if there is a tool or an extension that could only extract external face of a rather detailed model. I don't mind the details, but its slowing down the program quite a bit.

In other words, I'm only interested in the external dimensions of the model as it is simply a part of large system of equipment/instruments.

I don't know of an extension for that but I've never looked very hard, either. It probably wouldn't be all that difficult to manually separate the outer skin from the inside and delete the inside. It depends on how the model is made, though. Can you share the SKP file? If not publicly, via private message would be fine.

The model was originally a .step file and I imported it into SketchUp. The way it got imported is very messy.

I'm not authorized to send a private message and the file is too large to share. Here is a link to the file:

Step files are a pia to work with in SketchUp because of the way things get grouped. Maybe the best way to do it is to explode the large parent group. Then select groups forming the outer section and move them to one side. Move them some easy distance like 200mm. Keep selecting groups and moving them until you have the entire exterior moved over. Then you can delete the stuff you don't want. It's going to be tedious but it's what happens when the model is created as it has been.

Thank you! For some reason the imported model was cleaner which allowed me to do what Dave R suggested. I was able to reduce the size of the model from 35 mb down to about 4 mb πŸŽ‰
