Hi, I already made some simple garden landscape plans in SU but I am always struggling how to start or setup the drawing and I really could use some tips.
The basic idea is that I always start in top view and draw the exterior lines of the garden and put this in a group called "groundplan". This area is automatically filled up with a face.
Then I start drawing the outer lines of plant areas, grass areas, concrete path, shed, etc... Each entity is put into a group while I am still in top view. No 3d is used at this moment.
Not every entity - grass area or plant area - will have (or need) an elevation, only another texture.
So when I go to isometric view I have Z figthing (with the "groundplan") which I basically understand.
I already tried to give the areas a small elevation to get rid of the Z fighting but when I have to adjust my drawing I have to zoom in very far to select faces which are sometimes very small due to the small elevation.
Another way is by moving only the "groundplan" a little bit below all other entities.
I also discovered that when making the grass areas a component instead of a group I can cutout the shape from the groundplan.
So, you can somebody give me some advise what the best way is to create a garden drawing.
      Kind regards and thanks

Not real sure why you can't push/pull the flower beds etc. to say 1/4" high. If you need to change it's size use the scale tool. If it's grouped use your arrow keys when moving something around, locks the direction no need to zoom in. If you can post an example of what your doing you might get some more helpful input.

Diether, can you post a simple example? I am not sure, but it sounds like what you want to do is workbable if you use various techniques with components, locking the ground plane, perhaps temporary working planes etc.

For one thing, I wonder what the purpose of the "ground plane" is? Is it to have a base texture like soil or grass? If not could it be you can work on SketchUP's own ground plane with just an outline of the garden and no face?

If it's just the outline of the garden with a face, then you might have better luck creating "glue to + cutting" components of grass, trees etc. They'll cut the groundplan's face if they are put directly on its face, i.e. inside the groundplan group. They cut only one face, say the lawn, when put on there. Not the face of say a separate path's face drawn in the groundplan's group. Unless you put them there first. So each component entity can only "belong" to one face to glue on and to cut.
