Model is bloated with materials and difficult to move around
-
I have a model with some fairly intricate components that have a good number of textured materials on them. Moving around the components is getting troublesome (slow). I'm wondering if there is a plugin that will allow for temporary removal of materials so that the components can be positioned easier. Then, of course, they would need to be re-applied.
Thanks

Instead of doing that, just switch the face style to Monochrome so the materials aren't being displayed.
Anything you do to get rid of the materials from the file will require you manualy reapply the materials later.

Just to be sure. You don't happen to have shadows on? That's a real performance killer.
Secondly, I've noticed that a model with lots of geometry can be slow to navigate but if you group them into a few groups it will be much faster. -
If can have groups instead of some components it will also be faster. So, for big models "good" modeling practices (I know Dave will kill me now... ) it's better to start off by groups and not components.
(Before you kill me Dave) Rich O'Brien made a tree model with all leaves as components and it worked slower... Now I can't find it and I can't be sure if the leaves were pure geometry or groups...
