Latest Project
-
Hey there all- I'd like to share my latest project. A sofa table, 74"x24"x16", made from Madrone and Bird's Eye Maple. Nary a straight line in the piece. Bent laminations, double mortice and floating tenon construction. I always say it, that SketchUp was invaluable, but this time I mean it literally. I don't know that I would have been able to build it, without SU helping me with angles, layout, measurements, etc. A joy, and a challenge, to build. Oh, almost forgot- the design was influenced by one by Michael Fortune, a well-known Canadian woodworker

Ooh! Very nice! I like that piece.
-
That's incredible. How do you even get Madrone for something like that?
-
via UPS! Got it from Goby Walnut in Portland, Or.

Very nice indeed!

Thank you

Not just a study but a wonderful (real) piece of furniture - I'm impressed.
I particularly like that the table top is made of 2 boards, which are tapered(?) like wings outwards.
And I agree with your statement about the role of SketchUp in dealing with such complex geometry... -
Thanks a lot. I like the "split" top effect as well, and for a while have wanted to use it in a piece. The idea to taper the undersides was an idea I "borrowed" from Michael Fortune. The end view reminds me of older car tail lights (Cadillac maybe?)

excellent. I am old school and do not care for floating tenons ; but it works.
Your portfolio is amazing. -
thank you- I hear you about floating tenons, and in general, I agree. But trying to cut integral ones on curved pieces over five feet long, with angled shoulders- just a little too much for me. Perfect job for the router
