Just now finally trying to use Layout, but am having a problem right off the bat.
- SketchUp Pro 2015 β version 15.3.331 64-bit
- SketchUp Layout β version 3.0 16846
The answer is in the question. You're trying to insert a SketchUp file from a newer version of SketchUp into an old version of LayOut. V3 of LayOut was shipped with SU8. You should be opening LO V 15.3.xxx. Try inserting the SKP file into the current version of LO and see what you get.

You can also save a 2015 skp as v8. (Sketchup 2015 > File > Save As...> Options in the bottom.)

True. But why would you use LO3 when you have LO15?

I don't know... people have funny ideas though!
Anyway I write this kind of stuff just so people that have similar issues and try to use the search engine, find info about their own questions... I guess I just like to widden the scope when I don't really know what the OP is thinking!

Thanks for the quick replies, folks.
When I opened Layout, then did a Help > Check for update, I'm told:

A new version of SketchUp LayOut is now available.
I clicked the Upgrade Now button. That takes me to http://www.sketchup.com/download/all. Since I see no reference on that page to Layout, I assume that downloading the latest version of SketchUp Pro 2015 will include the latest version of Layout. I guess not.
It's not clear to me why when I specifically ask for the latest version of Layout, it sends me to a SketchUp Pro 2015 download web page. Where then do I need to go to download the latest version of Sketchup Layout?
Thanks for your help.

LayOut 2015 is packaged with SketchUp 2015. the only way to get LayOut is with SketchUp. since you have SU2015 Pro installed, you do have LO2015, too. But if you still have SU8 Pro installed, you still have LO3. The version number you gave for LO indicates it is the one packed with SU8.
Look at the applications on your machine and you'll find LO2015. Or try using Send to LayOut from the File menu in SU2015. That'll automatically open LO2015.
Unlike many programs, SketchUp and LayOut don't overwrite older versions when they are installed so you can have more than one version installed on your computer if you wish.

I did a number of Google searches, including "download latest version of sketchup layout" It results in nothing significant. [link]
From the last post by Dave R, it appears that I need to simply point my application icon at a different executable. I'll give it a go. Thanks Dave.
At first glance I now see a LayOut 2015 icon on my desktop. Since I never actually use my Desktop, but rather organize my programs' access using a customized Start menu, I never did see that. Thanks. Should be an easy fix.

Good enough.
While you're playing around with it, try the Send to LayOut thing in SketchUp's file menu, too. It's pretty handy.

Love the "3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the population", Dave.
Thanks for your help.

Not everyone is aware of that statistic.
Glad to hear you're sorted out now.
