Windows 10

Also been using 10 for paid work for 8 - 9 months without major issues. Had some problems with nvidia drivers and bsod for a while, but these seem to have been sorted.
I do like it. One thing I would like to be improved is legacy stuff that ms does not remove probably to avoid breaking old outdated programs. For example, and it is probably a major undertaking, but..., there is now a new way to set things up on a machine, called settings, but we still have the good old control panel. BUt I guess that is ms. If my memory is correct, I do remember having still having windows 3.11 inside win 98 and ME.
Apple did it right, when they moved to x86, and left rosetta initially as standard install, and then as optional, until they finally decided to remove it forever. Also did this with the classic enviroment, which essentially was a virtual machine running os pre x. But, ms would probably upset some big enterprise running some obscure accouunting software from 1997 if they decide to remove legacy support.
I do like the new start menu, the live tiles seem kind of useful, and the tamed metro interface inside windows seem to be a good compromise. I do like the flat metro look, and would recommend it over 8 and 8 definitely, over 7, and certainly over xp (those candy buttons really look dated nowadays)
It is as fast as 8, if not faster, but nowadays that is all relative, with widespread availability of ssds and hybrid drives.
Sketchup works the same way it did in 8 /8.1 As previously mentioned, display scaling sucks, and skp will look terrible. Avoid high dpi screens, or stick to 100% scaling. Lets hope trimble does some overhaul of skp ui, with more modern interface elements that work better with display scaling.
I had lots of problems with bsod when I upgraded to 10. I upgraded and the NVIDIA drivers messed up so had to reinstall them, had to try multiple times and when complete upon restart it would stick in an endless loop of bsod. In the end I opted to revert back to 7. I am going to have another go this weekend when I have more time, can I ask what you did to solve your issues?
Thanks

I just installed 10 coming from 8.1
I love the fact that the second desktop is gone and my new black startmenu bar, but apart from that I see nothing really new that pushes me toward it.
When I transitioned it uninstalled my nvidia drivers but all is fine since I downloaded and installed the new version win10 ready.

I sus had issues with NVIDIA drivers. The latest ones I'm running work fine. I'll check as soon as I have one of my machines running. The ones installed by ms did not work. I also got bsod with those.

Question: I have 1 pc running win7x64 home premium and 1 pc running win7x64pro. First one will upgrade to win10home and the other to win10pro. Can they still connect / share files over the network if both are upgraded? I expect not (no domain function available in win10home) but maybe someone knows?
-
I think it should work like with win 7 pro/home. Home comes without some networking and group policy features, but thats the same for win 7 home.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/WindowsForBusiness/Compare (Business Experiences)The big change from Win7 Home to Win 10 Home is that you can't disable automatic updates!

I'm currently running version 353.62 of nvidia drivers, without issues. Some previous version had problems. You may need to manually download these from nvidia, and replace the ones that ms installs from windows update. Maybe by this time, the ones available on windows update are current with the ones from nvidia.

Thanks for the reply. They changed a few things from 7 to 10 so it's no guarantee it will work in 10 again. Your link clearly states - no domain join for win10home. Still hesitating to upgrade if I'm not 100% sure it will work.

This is the reason why Win 10 is "free". The new No.1 spyware in the world... nothing comes for free!
I will not update any of my Win 7 licenses until it`s safe to say that you can disable everything of these data collectors.

This reminds me of the two way screens in Orwell's "1984" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescreen ...Windows became Android. With no alternative. Maybe Linux will stay the only one way operating system?

I bit the bullet and switched, the initial setup was a fail but a second attempt went OK. Apart from not being able to find stuff it seems usefully quicker than win 7 but I am still finding my way around.

I don't know if it disables everything and if it is safe to use, but it is at least a beginning...

Google-ing for 'SketchUp Layout Linux' results in quite some posts where people only can start SketchUp with ruby disabled AND Layout doesn't work at all etc... Would be nice if Trimble would release a Linux version some day.

Just to inform you...
it seems that these Win 7 updates add some of the Win 10 spy functionality to Win 7 and 8

KB3022345

To avoid this, do not install them. Or you can remove them if they are already installed.
