Been wanting to do this one for awhile. There's some great resources including threads, posts, plugins which helped me figure all this out for myself, and I thought I would share.

One point I don't mention in the video (there's now a callout), is you MUST work from the TOP view (thus the name Voronoi XY I suppose!). Any other view and it won't work.

Yep, I suppose so. Actually, the reason is so that I can go back in a few months and figure out what the hell I was doing when I created the tire, or rim, or voronoi pattern. I can go months between use and need to have something which reminds me how to work. Also, I work in lots of different 3D packages, and it becomes tedious remembering how flowify works in SU, vs flow in MoI, vs Lightwave's custom plugin mappers. Ugh..

I know the feeling... I only have so much space in my mental hard drive and often clear the cache for new info.

At least you have a hard drive and cache. Im pretty sure I'm only working with a single floppy drive!

chipp: You may want to look at this tutorial....you can "voronoi" any model in meshlab. Start off with the SU model and then drape the voronoi over your model! It's awesome and you can do very complex models.

The problem with shape bender in SU is that you can only ever achieve a 180 degree model....in meshlab you can achieve a full voronoi pattern all round your model.

Some models I made starting off with a simple SU model:

Thanks! GMTA. I literally was just watching that tutorial when your post notification came through! Crazy!
Is there any other workflow tutes on Meshlab and Voronoi? Thanks for sharing!

                  Yes....

                  http://meshlabstuff.blogspot.de/2009/03/creating-voronoi-sphere.html

Same process pretty much. I have tried and tried and tried to do all this in SU but it's impossible. Of course you can do a flat surface but rarely is that required unless for a facade.

The topology isn't amazing using the meshlab technique.....but it depends on the model. You can 3D print the meshlab model no problems though and tiny defects in the topology don't even show up.

Another fast way to delete the unwanted edges (merge faces, erase stray edges)...

Again a very nice tutorial, thank you.

Though I might be unlikely to use voronoi patterns like this, the tuts are engaging and include some great tips in general. Nice work! I might use the stepping stones method.

How about use of "remove lonely vertices" and Vertex tools "merge close vertices" (with distance input) to help prepare the pattern?

I was introduced to this technique as I watched ixlrxli's videos, and so I tried it and liked it. It's especially helpful when using the move tool, as it's easier to snap to an axis. It also helps me eyeball proportions and line up drawings. I tried it and liked it.

meshlabserver allows you to save a series of filters [that you select in Meslab] as a file and then apply that resulting .mlx on an input file from a command line script...

I have run these from ruby inside SU...
