Issues after importing a 3DS file
-
Hi all,
I'm a relative SU newbie, and I just imported a .3DS file of a house. I discovered that the push/pull tool won't work on any of the walls. The push/pull icon has a little red international "no" symbol next to it.
Why can I not push or pull any of the walls? If I draw a shape on a wall, like a circle, I can push/pull it, but it doesn't make a hole through the wall like it would in a shape I drew in SU.
Obviously, there's something about the imported walls that SU is treating differently, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Any ideas?
Thanks!

We can't see your image
But I believe that all your volumes are groups or Components! So just double click for edit them then you will can PushPull them!
It's possible that these groups or components are inside an arborescence
so go to the root of each tree for edit it!Same reason for the circle : you are outside the component or group!

Thanks for the reply and info, pilou.
I think you are right that the entire model is in a group. When I click any item, the entire model is selected. When I double-click (as you recommended), I'm now able to push/pull the wall, which is some progress. However, I'm still unable to drill holes through the walls. I still get the weird effect where the shape (like a door) pokes out one side of the other of the wall, but there's no hole.
I'm attaching a copy of the model in case you or someone else can take a loot at it and maybe make some sense of it. All I want to do is be able to put doorways through the walls. Sorry the embedded pics didn't show up earlier, but you should be able to see for yourself now what I'm seeing.
Thanks again!

It's no wonder you can't push your holes for windows and doors through the walls. The inside faces are different components than the outside. Evidently the imported 3ds file needs some help after you get it into SketchUp. What application did you use to create the 3ds file? The inside and outside faces should be wrapped in the same component or group wrapper. Generally, all the walls for a floor would be put within the same component or group wrapper.
I would suggest that you start with a simple single room and learn to manage the group or component and use the basic tools before trying to draw an entire house.
After putting all the first floor walls into a single group and doing some other clean up, it is very easy to put opening in the walls.

@Dave R - Thanks for the additional info. That explains a lot. The 3DS model came from my sister's copy of HGTV Home Design Suite. I exported the drawing from there into a 3DS file, then imported that into SU. I thought that would work great, but apparently, something got munged either during the export or import. Or the exporter/importer doesn't work so well.
Well, hopefully not all is lost. I also exported DXF files, so maybe I can use them to build the house. And if that doesn't work, well... then I get to re-create the whole bloody thing manually.
Thanks for the advice, guys.
