      Hi there

I keep having this issue with referenced Sketchup scenes keep changing there positions in Layout after I have worked on them and updated the scenes in Sketchup and then updated the reference in Layout.

Is there an option to fixing the position in place (similar to fixing the scale of the reference) so that only the actual changes to the model itself are updated?

It is a real problem for me in particular when updating floor plans that are already fully dimensioned in layout... as all dimensions go bananas 😲 and fixing it is very laborious and vague.

      Any hints or help appreciated

      Cheers

      Dave

Dave, it sounds to me as if you are changing the camera position in SketchUp while you are making changes. What changes are you making in SketchUp that you wish to have carry through. If they are only geometry changes, there would be no need to update the scenes. Styles and Layer states would require updates but make sure you've returned to the scene's original camera position before making those changes and then update the scene. Or you can choose which parameters to save if you update through the Scenes window. I tend to skip that because it is additional things to manage between scenes.

In LayOut, if you double click on a viewport to get into its edit mode and then click out of it--no actual changes need to be made--you'll find that you can make changes to the geometry of the model and update those without causing potential camera changes to show from the updated scene. In fact anything that is part of the scene settings such as style settings, layer visibility, etc. will not show. The reason is that by editing the viewport, you've disconnected it from the original scene. This will be evident in the SketchUp inspector window by the word 'modified' in the Scenes text box.

Although making the viewport show 'modified' would do what you ask, it's generally not a good idea to have modified scenes because you do lose the link to the scene in SketchUp and thus a number of things that could be changed in the SU file won't be transmitted to the viewport.

Thanks Dave, I guess I have made it a bad habit to update any scenes pretty much every time I have made changes to a scene... in particular adjusting the visible layer sets.

You are right I have to now unlearn and make it a "good" habit to ensure sure that the camera is it's original position before updating.

So am I understanding it right working through the Layout Model window does not translate back to the original model but creates a sideline version of the model? If so that has never occurred to me ....

The answer is often so much simpler than the question

          Thanks a lot Dave

If you double click on and open a viewport in LO, you can orbit, pan and zoom the view much in the way that you can orbit, pan and zoom in SketchUp. But, you are correct, that doesn't get translated back to the SketchUp file. It only creates views that are no longer tied to the original scenes. It's much easier to maintain full control over the viewports if you avoid editing them in LO. Instead make any changes including zooming and other camera changes in SU.

Those edits you might make in the viewports don't create a new SketchUp file, they just create new views that aren't linked to the scenes in the SU file.
