I'm thinking of ditching Vectorworks 12.5 (yes I'm still using it!), but not sure I can create the plans I will need in the UK for Building Control and for construction information.

For example, if I'm building a model of say a house with a brick and block insulation cavity wall, do I need to build those elements separately in the model i.e. 18mm plaster, 100mm block, 50mm insulation, 50mm cavity, 100mm brickwork, so that when I cut a plan view my drawing shows the construction, or is there a wall type you can use like in Vectorworks where you draw a wall combined of the elements you need?

I don't have a massive turnover as a sole practitioner architect, so am attracted by the versatility and value of SU, but having used it only for 3D sketch models, I'm not sure I can make the leap of faith to using it as a full construction package.

      Any advice greatly received.

Thanks, I have watched those, and a few others, but still not sure of the actual mechanics of drawing the information. I see there is a plugin from PlusSpec that appears to show drawing the wall type in the model so that where ever you cut your section or plane, it shows the construction buildup. In Nicks video it appears that his model doesn't contain that construction info. and that he adds this when he needs it in his LO documents.

Just don't know if people build solid external walls in their model, then add construction graphical information later, or whether you can build the construction into the model.

I expect you'll find that people do different things but for standard types of construction, I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to draw entire structures with all that detail. Nick uses "canned" representative illustrations for those sorts of things. You should consider the time you'd have invested in placing all those entities and the return on that investment.
