A year later than originally planned, I finally purchased a Pro license... ironically on the very day that Pro 2015 was released (without realizing it).

Went to add the license to SU 2014 and it rejected it as invalid. Tried calling the support line, but it was so busy they were only taking messages for call-backs.

Went to the knowledge centre to try and resolve on my own and saw the 2015 is here notice β€” so downloaded 2015 and added the license without further incidence. All good. Went to sketchucation store and downloaded my plugin bundle. Awesomely easy!

Then opened a model and tried to navigate with my Space Mouse... no joy. More searching on-line and find out that between SU and 3DX they fumbled the timing of the driver re-write necessary to support 2015. 3DX is fuzzy about exactly when the new driver will be released: 'soon' (which could mean a day / week / month).

So after finally springing for Pro, a week later I'm still stuck in 2014 Make β€” because it's impossibly slow and frustrating to model without my 3D mouse, and there doesn't seem to be a way to add the license to 2014.

Back story complete, here's my question: Is a pro license meant to be valid across different versions of SU?(i.e. 2014/15). If so, any guesses as to why it's rejecting the license number in 2014?

      Thanks

each version has it's own licence, had you bought a day earlier, you would have received a v2014 lic and then a free update to v2015...

then you would of had both...

No. Licenses are not meant to be valid across different versions. A new license is required for each version.

I can't say why the 2014 license won't take but I think if you let Customer Support know, they might upgrade you to the SU2015 license.

As for the Space Mouse a new driver is needed. Check the 3D Connection site for a new one. If it isn't currently available, it should be soon.

I missed that line. So db got the SU2015 license instead of for SU2014.

Have been checking their site daily... this was their rather unhelpful forum post last week:

                Hi all,

we are in the testing phase of the next release. As I cannot predict how the testing will be I cannot make any statement about a release date. We plan to provide the new plugin "soon".

Their latest post this week was a little more forthcoming, and I just hope he's right about days, not weeks:

                Hi,

We are in the final testing phase and try to make the plug-in available ASAP for you.

However, some issues found during testing have pushed us back a little bit (I am talking about a few days – hopefully this week, not several weeks or months). In the meantime, whilst not ideal, you may want to consider re-installing SketchUp 2014 just until we can provide you with the new plug-in. We do apologize for the delay and fully understand your frustrations. Please be assured we are working as fast as possible to get you all back up and running with your 3D mice in SketchUp 2015.

In the meantime I guess I'm stuck in Make 2014 until the driver update is released. Not the end of the world, but a bit frustrating.

That's it. As I said in the original post (maybe a bit convolutely), once I realized that 2015 had been released and that my license was for it, there was no issue adding the license to Pro 2015. I just didn't realize that each version had a different license, and was hoping to enable Pro 2014 so I could use my 3D mouse until they release the 2015 driver.

So I have my answer: I'll just have to wait until 3Dconnexion gets their act together. Hard to know how much business SU users represent to them, but given their promotion efforts here on SCF, I would have thought that they'd be a little more on the ball with the timing.

I know what you mean. I suppose you could use a mouse until then. πŸ˜‰

Always tough in written text to convey tone and proportion. There is certainly a difference between temporary frustrations and real problems. But the fact remains that this minor annoyance could have been avoided by a more proactive approach on behalf of the parties involved.

Makes me wonder if a 2014 license or upgrade can be bought at this point (speaking in general)... Seems it should be allowed as people will obviously have reasons NOT to want 2015 so early. One should have a choice.

I agree. Or Trimble could simply include a second license key for the previous version (2014 in this case) on purchase. As Driven pointed out upthread, I would have had both licenses if I had only purchased a day sooner.

Either way, there are always issues with new releases β€” either the stability of the app itself; OS upgrade issues (i.e. Yosemite); or of compatibility of necessary extensions/drivers. Having both versions would allow the user to navigate the transition period based on their needs, until full stability/compatibility is reached with the newly-released version... without any attendant loss of productivity/functionality.

To be fair to Trimble, I haven't requested a 2014 license key as of yet β€” and maybe they would be happy to issue one. Just seems more user-friendly (and less work for their support team) if the second key was included as a matter of policy.

                              As a follow-up:

Just received notice that the new SU2015-compatible 3DXWare driver for Space Navigator/Space Mouse has been released. I've downloaded it and given it a quick test and everything seems to work fine. Yea β€” full speed ahead in 2015 Pro!

Next up on the migration odyssey: Yosemite. When and if? Anybody have any advice/experience on 2015 with Yosemite? (not that SU is the only app that I need to ensure is compatible, but without it fully functional... not even worth considering the OS 'upgrade'.)
