VRAY Material Mapping ssues
-
Hello everyone,
I’m Carl, I’m a freelance architectural designer and I guess you could say I’m relatively new to using VRAY and Sketchup; I’ve been using it on and off for the last few years but only to the level of model making and basic white studio renderings.
Lately though I’ve been trying to teach myself how to do more with VRAY as I really like the results that I get from it and it can be relatively easy to use, however for some of the stuff that I am trying to figure out I don’t seem to be able to find the answers and was hoping that someone here may be able to help. I think they are fairly simple answers and some of you may role your eyes at the noob, but I was always taught there are no stupid questions there are only answers.
Any way before I blabber on to much here are my questions.

I always work in millimetres, however when I use VRAY none of the standard textures or materials are ever to scale. Is there a reason behind this or should I be working at a different scale? Everything I do is on a scale of one to one.

If I rescale the texture/material using Sketchups default reposition texture tool I can easily manipulate rotation, scale and such however I find that this only affects the diffuse layer of the material when proceeding to render and the bump, noise, etc maps all stay the same as the setting they were imported in at. The problem is that the VRAY material in the channel diffuse; then UVW section (which is what I assume controls the material scale), the scale has not changed and therefore I do not know what settings to put in the other options to ensure that the bump, noise, etc maps all follow through to the render.
2.a. I use only the Sketchup default reposition texture tool and I did know the values how do the other channels know where to place themselves?
- My final question at this time is roughly along the lines of mapping, for example I recently downloaded a great material called ‘Ledgestone Brown’ which will look great once I figure out how to use it properly. The problem is when its when you apply it to the object it kind of does whatever the heck it wants in terms of where it goes, do I need to change the UVW type in the diffuse (and others) channel to something else or will this require me to adjust using the Sketchups default reposition texture tool.
This problem also occurs most when using marble or wooden material on work surfaces when filleted edges.
Any help anyone can give would be amazing as these area are a little frustrating especially as I don’t seem to be able to find any information or topics that cover them. If I haven’t explained it properly please let me know and I’ll see if I can explain it in more detail. I can also upload images of what I mean if needed.
Thank you in advance to anyone that can help.
Carl

I would highly recommend using Fredo's Thrupaint plugin for applying textures to your SU model.
Note that default texture size in vfs is 10 inches (254mm) = UV of 1.0
The bump maps should correspond with your SU material and there shouldn't be any need to adjust the UVW scale in vray.
