Is there a tool or procedure where I can use my selection tool, pick a component, group, or drawn object, select it and go directly to that particular layer. This would be very handy for me because some of my projects have a lot of layers. Thanks.

So just to be clear, you want to select a group/component, and once selected, you want SketchUp to automatically make the layer to which the object is assigned the current layer, correct?

You'd probably find Layers Panel useful.

If that's the case, it's a sure way to frustration. πŸ˜‰

Well stated Dave, I was hoping I'd misinterpreted it πŸ˜„

I'm afraid you probably didn't. I'll be interested to see the OP's input.

Thanks to those who replied. Sorry I did not respond right-a-way.

That is what I wanted to know. If I could pick anything, see what layer it was on, and go to that layer like a "match property" tool. It would be very handy for me.

What I want to know now is how could this lead me down the road of frustration? I see nothing but upside for this tool.

Take some time to read the help files about using layers. Especially this: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/38572

You shouldn't be "going" to other layers. Instead you should leave Layer 0 as active and do all your drawing work there. Then only make other layer associations for components and groups. You leave ALL edges and faces on Layer 0. Failing to follow that simple work flow will lead to great frustration.

The frustration that Dave alluded to, at least I believe he was, stems from the fact that Layer's properties in SketchUp don't behave the same as they do in, say AutoCAD.

Most programs Layer's provide Geometric Separation, where it's impossible to mess with geometry on a layer that is turned off. SketchUp, conversely, has Layer's that are Visual separation only, meaning that they control only visibility. Furthermore, in SketchUp, all faces and edges you draw should reside on Layer 0, and you should only place groups or components on Layers that you've created.

Changing your active layer to match the selected group would mean that anything (edges, faces) would also go onto that layer, which causes issues. In short, I think it'd actually cause you more work in the long run. It'd be a good idea if Layers worked a little differently, but I think it'd give you more headaches than it'd save.

Apologies if that was overly wordy.

Matt, I was in the process of adding that to my previous post but you said it well enough that I don't need to. Thanks.

Personally I like the way layers work in SketchUp.

Thanks Dave. I actually noticed you beat me to the punch before I even finished writing my post! πŸ˜†

I actually quite like the way the layers work as well, but it take me some grinding, awful mental gear changes to get there.
