Continuity of Customizations
-
Hello,
I am a dedicated SU pro and LO pro user. Your software has made my house remodeling project something that is achievable for me instead of a pipe dream. But, down to business: I have dutifully upgraded to the latest versions from SU/LO 8 Pro, SU/LO 2013 Pro, and now SU/LO 2014 Pro. And every time, I have to spend a considerable amount of time re-creating the virtual environment that I have painstakingly created with earlier versions. While I sincerely appreciate the flexibility of customizing my design environment, I have to admit that re-creating that for each new SW update is a PITA. And as a pro user I have to do that twice (SU and LO). Is there any way that my current SU and LO configurations can be "captured" and mapped to the new software? I'm including not only my customized toolbars and screen arrangements, but also any plug-ins which I have downloaded and customized to my liking. (I'm sure that there is a method because you're a bunch of really smart guys). Hey, there may already be some sort of way to do this (via a plug-in??). But I am unaware of any. In any case, if I were running a business (which I have in past lives), I would seriously consider the cost and annoyance to the user of having to spend the extra time to re-create their customizations for every upgrade to a new software version. It took me 8 hours (one work day)to reconfigure from SU/LO 2013 to SU/LO 2014. Designers and engineers charge about $100/hour for their time, so that about covers a license for SU/LO pro. Hopefully, this is helpful insight.
Thanks!
Frank Borik.

Get a Mac. Then it is NEVER the same and you won't care at upgrading.

On this topic, are there written guidelines to follow when updating from one version to another in order to maintain your customization. I.e. which folders/files can be copied into the new version without damage. I agree, it would be nice to have this automation occur. starting from scratch for each upgrade is a pain and I'm almost certain there will be something missed.
Thanks!

lapx, it's been covered repeatedly here on the forum.
You can copy your templates, styles, materials. Don't copy plugins, though. Download fresh copies. Many plugins needed updating with the switch to Ruby 2.0 in SU2014. This shouldn't be an onerous task since most plugins are available through either the Sketchucation Plugin Store or the Extension Warehouse which will both automatically install the plugins you select. It might be a good time to pare down the list of plugins in your Plugins folder anyway.
Setting up toolbars shouldn't take you very long. On the PC you can make custom toolbars for the native tools if you wish. It's quick and easy and can buy you a bit of toolbar real estate because you can eliminate buttons you don't need and by combining tools from multiple toolbars you can get rid of a bunch of those dividers.
