Solar North Toolbar -- Where is it in SU 2014?
-
Hello,
I've just upgraded to SU 2014 pro. Fortunately, I did not uninstall SU 2013, which in this case had a
"Solar North" toolbar. Now, I cannot find the "Solar North" toolbar on SU 2014. Furthermore, I cannot seem to locate the function. Is this a loss of functionality? If so, then SU 2014 is a degrade. Can anybody tell me where to look or what happened? Thanks for your help!

Frank,
A lot has been said about proper installation of SU plug-ins/extensions.That said......I cannot say.......what I suggesst....as being "safe" for SU 2014.
I am on a PC (Windows 7 Pro)
OS(C:)Program files (x86)...SketchUp...SketchUp2013...Tools...Copy...(Solar North File).... and (SolarNorth.rb) ................
Now go back to.....SketchUp2014...Tools...Paste ...(Solar North File).... and (SolarNorth.rb) .....
Close SU if open...............open SU.......View.........Toolbars........Enable Solar North
Best,
Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Many thanks for your advice, but unfortunately, no luck. The choice did not appear. I got an error message when trying to copy the file into the 2014 "tools" folder, and placing it in the SU 2014 general folder, didn't seem to work. I didn't see a "plugins" folder in SU 2014, so that may be part of the problem.
Many thanks for your suggestions!
Can someone from Trimble please explain this loss of functionality? I'm paying for this as a pro user and I'm not very happy at the moment. I didn't expect SU 2014 to be a "downgrade"!

The Solar north toolbar hasn't been included for a while now. Even in SU2013 you would have had to install it separately. From within SU2014 go Window/Extension Warehouse type solar into the search box and download it from there.
The plugin folder does exist but it has moved. Don't copy plugins from an old version, download them fresh as many have been updated to work with the new ruby system

Great...
From the warehouse this morning...
This extension has not been marked as being compatible with your version of SketchUp. You may experience usability issues if you try to install this extension.

That's not the correct location. That is a folder in Program Files intended for SketchUp only.
Solar North has since SU2013 been a downloadable extension available from the Extension Warehouse. http://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/solar-north
Open Extension Warehouse from SketchUp (Window > Extension Warehouse) and click on the "SketchUp Team" under "Top Developers" on the right hand side. From there you find all the extensions SketchUp distribute - among them Solar North.

Were you logged in?
There has been a bug in EW where you would get that message if you where not logged in. I just tried on my machine - being logged into SU and I was unable to reproduce that message. -
Worked this time. Thanks Thomas, I was beginning to think it had been dumped. Still not sure why it isn't installed with the main package?

It wasn't really used by that many people. Ditto for the shadow fix. Since we got the EW in SU2013 it was easy enough to distribute it via that to those who really needed it. Avoiding bloat and all that.

Thanks, Thomas, for your help and response. For some reason, I thought the Solar North was included in SU 2013 (much like some of the camera plug-ins). But my memory is getting feebler by the minute, so I'm sure your're right. I think that the idea of better integration of the EW with SketchUp is really good and it seems that the ability to truly customize SU without a bunch of features that you won't use much is forward thinking and useful. I'll go about getting the Solar North plug-in and installing it, and while I'm at it, I'll look around to see what other customization options might be available.
Thanks again!!
