Hello your help needed to get me started on CutList
-
Hello all, I'm new to the forum, SketchUp and CutList. So hello to everyone, and might I ask something relating to the installation of CutList which is causing me quite a bit of frustration and a headache:
I have installed SketchUp 8, on my Mac (OSX), but when it comes to installing CutList (4.1.10) I'm at a loss as to why it simply fails.
As instructed, I've tried to install from within CutList itself, using Preferences, then Install Extensions, followed by selection of the rbz extension in downloads, but when I select it, and that it's trustworthy etc., it just comes up with the message:
"SketchUp was unable to install the Extension you have chosen for some unknown reason". No indication or message telling my why, or what might need looking at; just "...for some unknown reason". Most unhelpful.
So now I'm appealing to those of you who have experience in these matters, in the hope that someone can throw some light on this?
I'm not very computer literate, so please keep it simple - thanks in advance!

This sounds like it might be a lack of permissions for the Plugins folder. Make sure you have FULL read and write permissions for that folder and then try installing the plugin again.

Thank you Dave, but I'm stumped already
You said:
"This sounds like it might be a lack of permissions for the Plugins folder. Make sure you have FULL read and write permissions for that folder and then try installing the plugin again. If the Library folder is hidden, you'll need to make it visible. Type ~Library in the search window of Finder, hold Option and hit Return. Right click on the Plugins folder, choose Get Info. Unlock to allow changes and change for your log in to Read and Write"
Well, I went into Finder and did a search for '~Library' and nothing whatsoever came up. So I typed 'Library' and masses of options came up. I sorted them alphabetically and could only find 2 'Library' folders. One was empty, and the other nothing to do with the programs we're talking about.
I'm assuming the 'hidden' Library folder would ordinarily be visible in Finder? Anyway I'm not sure either, what the instruction "hold Option and hit Return" is executed? (I did say I'm not very computer literate, so what seems easy to someone like your good self, is never straightforward to someone like me - so I'd rather you talk in step-by-step language [not assuming anything, for I don't mind if you talk down to me, effectively]).
For the record, when I eventually (and hopefully) do get to see the folder you're talking about, do you mean select+hold AND Return at the same time, or something else? I find the whole process confusing.
Sorry to be a pain - and thanks in advance

Ian, sorry that wasn't clear. How about looking at this. It explains getting to that folder better than I can.

Hello again Dave,
Apologies for not giving you any feedback/update since your last post, but there is a reason for this: I have spent a whole day on it myself, to no avail (even consulting your link). A friend of mine in IT also had a look and spent 2.5hrs last night on it, during which time he spoke to a friend of his who has an Apple Mac and uses SketchUp, but still to no avail.
Then today a neighbour and friend of mine, who worked at IBM working on their computers, who has also worked on Unix-based operating systems, spent a couple of hours here trying to sort it out, but couldn't; so he's going to do some more research and come back to me.
So as you can see this is not an easy one to solve at all - though in fact I bet it turns out to be something simple, which when done, will suddenly work! But it's getting to that little something, which is proving very elusive!
So, don't think me rude in any way, Dave, for not coming back to you on this; but I assure you I am doing all I can to resolve this, and when I do, I shall be glad to report back and let you know what the problem was (I'm being an optimist here!
All the best!

Hi Dave,
I've tried to PM you, and although a message stated that it was sent, it nevertheless still shows in my outbox?! I wonder therefore if it has indeed been sent or not.
I attempted to send again, and again it said it was successfully sent, but now 2 messages sit in my outbox! I don't seem to be having much luck on here, do I?
Please let me know if you did indeed receive my message (even 2 of them!).
Thanks Dave.

Hello Ian, your PM got through; twice.
I sent you a return PM and an e-mail.

Hi Dave,
Just to thank you so VERY much for all your help. You've been invaluable in helping me get CutList up and running in SketchUp. All the hours I've spent, and others too, only to have someone such as yourself, an expert, help. It made everything clear and now it's all systems go!
I've also sent you an e-mail, with a bit more information in, follow our exchanges. I hope you receive it okay.
I owe you one, Dave!
Thanks a bunch.

PS A big thank-you to SketchUcation too, for having such a portal through which to conduct this kind of problem and solutions. I'm certain I'll be back from time to time as I learn the ropes of both CutList and SketchUp. Pretty amazing tools. So cheers to the team too!
