Is there a setting that allows me to automatically save back to an older version of sketchup to avoid compatibility issues - much like autocad?

Not automatically but you can use File>Save as.... and change the file type to the older version.
There's a plugin that might help, though. See: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33441

You can go till V6 if you have not Dynamic components or V7 if you have them !
