Layers protect from items in '0 layer'?
-
I am working on a project, (SketchUp that is quite involved. as each area was completed I put it in a layer so that it can be removed to see what I'm doing. As I worked a section I forgot to transfer it to a layer but kept going. Because I was working in a vary close area I didn't realise that I made a mistake on an other part of the section. Saved it until the next day only to find my error, I forgot to put it in a layer. I had to redo a lot of work.
When I work with 'Paint Shop Pro Photo' I put different parts in 'layers' so that if I use the 'eraser', work in other layers are not effected by anything I do. So the question is;
While I'm working in 'layer 0' removing, altering etc., items in other layers are protected? -
Layers in SketchUp do one thing and one thing only. They control visibility of entities associated with them. Layers do not separate entites from each other. If you take the time to read the help files and do a search on 'layers' here, you'll find the advice that only components and groups get layer associations other than Layer 0. You do all your drawing on Layer 0. When you're ready to do so associate components and groups with the other layers in your model. ALWAYS leave Layer 0 as active and ALWAYS leave edges and faces on Layer 0. Failure to follow that simple advice will cause you no end of troubles.
From the Knowledge Base files:
"Note: You cannot delete Layer0. Entities that reside on Layer0 always inherit their visibility from the layer of the components/groups that contain them. This makes layer 0 work like the default drawing layer. If you use any other layer as a drawing layer, all the entities that were created on that layer will become invisible when you hide that layer. This is not the case when hiding layer 0. Any entities that are on layer 0, but inside a group or component that is on another layer, will remain visible when you hide layer 0."

I believe that if the original geometry is on layer "0" and then grouped and put on a new layer that all works but if each layer is original geometry sketchup's stickiness will cause you issues. That is if I am reading you right.
I am attaching a little rule card that I share with a lot of folk.
remember that layer "0" is different than all layers once a geometry is grouped or a component and put on a new layer if you turn off layer 0 the item dose not go inadvisable this is the only one that is like that.
Please if I am off track some one may be able to enlighten the area better.
I also atached a file that I use to enplane layer ect
Six Rules for Modeling in SketchUp.pdf

Dave, what do you mean by, "item dose not go inadvisable this is the only one that is like that?"
What is inadvisable?
Your rules are pretty good although my workflow is to complete a model before I assign layers but that's just me.
If all the groups and components are associated with layers other than Layer 0, there's no reason to untick the visibility box for Layer 0 and as long as you leave Layer 0 active, you can't untick it anyway.

spell check %$#^&* (invisible)
I just wanted to point out that layer 0 acts different than all other layers once signed to a group or a component if you unchecked it the item do not go invisible. in my mind that is another reason to keep all geometry on "0" (active layer "0")
Thanks -
Dave. I like your rules, except I find it helpful to have scenes while modeling. And my models are never "complete".
Dave R. I like having layers while working on a large house model, again , before it is complete.
In fact I have tried working some with templates setup for houses, layers and scenes, including LayOut file with references setup for elevation scenes. You may have to adjust views and update, but it can work for similar projects.
Good help here. I wonder if SU layers could have been designed so that these mistakes don't occur to new users.
Bears repeating that components (or groups) will " protect" entities from adjacent work and editing.

Peter, as I said, that's just me. For the projects I do, it works well for me.
I wouldn't mind losing the ability to make other lays active since that is what causes the most problems for newer users.

Thanks everybody, everything you have told me has helped. I started out well and was organised but going deeper with the project I was getting "tunnel vision". I must stick to the rules and be more disciplined in what I'm trying to achieved.

to be clear the rules I have always used but the neat PDF I got from
