Groups to components
-
Hi Nikola, I think TIG or ThomThom did a plugin to do that. I'll look for it.
Edit: Try this: http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=29462

And in his Selection Toys, there is the tool "Convert into Components"...
-
Well it makes 120 different components.. which again does not help me.. I need it to convert all of the same groups to one type of component so I can edit them all at once
-
Selection Toys is the answer! Thanx a lot!

Sorry. Cotty to the rescue.
I've never ever run into the need to convert a bunch of copies of a group into components.
-
Right now I am editing someone else's model of a plant. I want and to map texture on all of the leafs at once, but they are all groups.. I would practically had to place every single leaf all over again as a component instead of a group.
And it did happened to me few times that I just forgot to make my group a component, and than I would lose the option to edit all at once. I guess you are just more careful when you work on your models

No. Probably not more careful. I just never make groups. I only use components so I never have to remember to convert. The only times there are groups in my models is when a plugin creates the group (Curviloft, for example does this) but I usually explode those groups right away because the geometry will be part of a component.

This plugin is awesome. I had someone at work trying to find a plugin to do this fairly recently. He ended up remodeling :. I'll have to share this with him.

Just a heads up on that, once they are all components you can select them, then in the component browser simply right click on the component you want and replace all of them with that component in one go.
So 120 different components can be converted to 120 instances of one component.

When importing a OBJ or 3DS I get groups and/or all separate componets (none duplicated)

Well, that kind of stinks, doesn't it? Since most of what I draw doesn't exist in another format, I guess I've not run into that problem. Sometimes I import CAD files and they come in as component but I rarely want them the way they are when imported.
It's interesting how different disciplines run into different issues.
