Curiuos about scale tool vrs push/pull
-
I have only been learning for a year now and things keep popping up I have to question. If I have multiple copies of the same component, why is it the scale tool will change one and not the others yet the push pull tool will affect all the copies? Is that an error in the tools or a built in design difference? Not that I mind because I use it that way, in combination with each other. I was just wondering.

The scale tool is scaling one instance of a closed component, the push pull tool is adjusting the geometry of the component itself.
You can scale a closed component or one open for editing, you can only use pushpull while in edit mode. -

I use it for setting my doors so that editing the styles and mullions are easier when changing a door size. Now I see it wasn't just 2 different programmers programming differently on the same action....

scaling will also stretch your textures...

Generally scaling would be inappropriate for changing the length of a part of your door; at least if there's any joinery or other detail involved. If you have a door rail that has tenons on the ends or is joined to the stiles with cope and stick joints, scaling will not only change the length of the overall part but also change the length of the joinery. Push/Pull wouldn't be the right tool either. The right tool to use would be the Move tool after selecting the geometry at the end of the rail. This would apply to many other resize operations as well. You can see that in action here and here.

What I don't see mentioned is that the scaling you are doing must have been done to the component and not EDITING the component. The only difference in the tool is that it may work on the "unopened" component, whereas a tool such as pushpull can only work on raw geometry (while EDITING a component). When you EDIT the component by "opening" it you affect all instances. When you scale a component without editing you only affect that instance. In theory that instance is still the same as the others, it's only a stretched version of the same object--like it is expressed through a different lens. Try editing a component and using scale tool on everything inside--then your other instances WILL be affected.
(OK Box mentioned it, but here's the long-winded version anyway.)
