This is one of those frustrations that I've learned to live with and never resolved.

      Imagine a drawn refrigerator.

When I want to rotate to see its side the orbit tool seems to want to tip it in every direction BUT that which would enable me to see the side. Eventually when you arrive at that side with the orbit tool the fridge is upside down.

So my "workaround" has been to tip the fridge forward, select all, use the rotate tool, rotate it 90 degrees, and tip it backward again. Very tedious.

If the 'position camera' 'look around' or 'walk' tools are supposed to facilitate this move I have yet to figure out how to use them so. I've tried without success.

      How is it done?

As seems you don't arrive with the normal tool try this! πŸ˜„

First use Axes Tool by Thomthom

        Then Mover 2 by CMD
Then make easily any rotation you want! β˜€

Since it hasn't been mentioned, I'll add this. From your description of your orbiting problem it sounds to me as if you have your refrigerator laying on its back or side with the models blue axis running out the front or side. Make sure you rotate the refrigerator so the blue axis would run up out of its top. Since this sounds like an ongoing problem, get in the habit of always modeling with the blue model axis pointing up.

Thank you very much you guys. Good options. Drawing on the vertical blue axis was especially helpful. Makes the movement of the object with the orbit tool more intuitive all around and enables rotating it as I wished without the need to select all or use other plugins.

I'm glad that helped. You'll find it is helpful for other reasons than just orbiting. Drawing with the the default axis orientation and solid blue up will make shadows correct and make your standard views more useful. If your model has a front, place it so it runs along the red axis direction and those standard views will all click into place.
