Why are sketchup file sizes so big ? When i compare they seem crazy. A 30mb .3ds file becomes a 415mb sketchup file. Then when i create a maxwell instance it becomes 50mb.

I understand softwares use different proprietary formats but a 10x increase seems crazy.

SketchUp embeds textures in the file - making it standalone. Many other formats only reference textures.

Also, make sure you purge your SketchUp models as data lingers, such as unsued layers, components and materials.

I do have a few 100-200MB files - but they are large models. 1-2 million faces with lots of materials. Btw, what is the model stats? (number of edges, faces etc?)

It's an xfrog free example. The original file is 30mb in .3ds format.Once it's imported the sketchup file is huge when saved.I am using sketchup 8.I am trying to make an instance of it. Sketchup is very unresponsive.

Here is another more manageable example:

I can't for the life me figure this out.
I tried bringing file into VUE and other programs and they are small in comparison to SU.
I can see maybe 20% but double.. trible and more.
                    I'm not qualified uderstand why.
Also, why does take 10X or 100 x longer to convert?

When this file is brought into sketchup are each of the leaves components? What's the detail level like on it? I've found with 3Dmax files they are always huge by the time they get into sketchup. But I can build the same model from scratch in SU and it's quite a bit smaller.

I think you may be on to something with components Krisidious. Does the skekchup .3ds importer support components ? I'd hate to replace them manually. Is there a shortcut i'm missing ?

groups can be replaced as one component. I think it's Thomthom who has a plugin to do it.

3DMax has in it's subscription tools a sketchup tool. I don't know which direction it goes but it may handle this task.

                            otherwise check this thread out.

From Max though I had to make sure that any detail was removed from my modelling, any object stacks were colapsed to an editable mesh (poly was okay but SU liked mesh better) and all materials were Standard Max materials with just basic colour (no maps). I think that's how we went about it. It was a while ago.
