Hey, Any woodworkers out there? I want to build molding for a woodworking project What I want to do is route a profile that starts and stops before the ends of the wood. I can draw a profile and create it starting on one end, but don't know how start and stop the profile in the middle. I want to do a 3/8" cove molding. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. I am just learning sketchup for woodworkers and have been doing simple drawings. Thanks for any help.

        Hi Don,

        Welcome to SCF.

So basically you want to do a stopped cut with a core box bit? This would be similar to a stopped flute in a pilaster or on a column and the approach would be the same. Draw a positive of the cove/flute and move it into the board. This positive is essentially the volume of space your spinning cutter would pass through. Then select the geometry of the cove/flute and intersect it with the face of the board. then delete the stuff you don't need and correct the face orientation as needed.

I've demonstrated this many times for other woodworkers. Somewhere I think I have some images showing it. I'll go hunting and see if I can find them.

Hey thanks Dave for your reply. Not quite sure what you mean by "draw an positive on the cove/flute and move it into the board. If you would have some images, that would be great. Do you know of any tutorials that would show the procedure? Thanks again for your imput.

I didn't find what I was looking for so I made a quickie.

The green thing floating on the right is the shape for the cove. Green is the color I use on the back faces so that thing is inside out. In the middle you can see it has been moved down into the face of the board. On the left you can see what happened after deleting the face skinning the cove.

I did a tutorial on this a long time ago but I think it has gone into the ether.

Do you need a hand getting the positive drawn?

Here's a tutorial on a simpler flute. Maybe this would help.
