Rental Car in France

Hi all.
My family (5 total) is planning on renting a car for a week or so and drive around the south of France (from Mazemet to Nice).
There are three mid-sized cars which are being considered: an Opel Astra Sport, an Opel Astra Sport Tourer, and a Renault Laguna.The Opel Tourer appears to be the largest and have more space.
For those of you who are familiar with these cars, could you verify this please?

Astra tourer is fine. What year?
Laguna is a nice enough with a big trunk.
If you can grab Nissan Quashqai or a Renault Scenic it'd be like the thing we had at Basecamp except not as high up.
Any estate car really will cover your ass for the holiday.
Just don't get caught with a 4 door hatchback or something equivalent.
Is it just for 3 people?

You want something huge and obnoxious, something that screams look I'm a yank.
Have fun in France, drink some of those awesome Belgian beers while there.

you may find all of them a bit small, by US standards.
The Astra is same chassis as a wagon version of Chevrolet Cruze 'compact'.
So although we call them mid-range they are more in line with a VW Jetta Sports Wagon.

Yeah, if you can afford it, I'd move up to a luxury full size touring edition. Then you might end up with something the size of a minicooper
Also, you'll need to upgrade to fit six people as you are now taking me along with you.

You should look for what we call a monospace.

Do not rent a too huge car though Especially in Southern France, there are small towns with narrow streets and you may feel uncomfortable driving a van there.

I suggest walking... Europe is only like 100 miles wide.

Well, Kris, believe or not, I do not have a driving license nor even a season ticket for public transport. I almost exclusively walk in town (although Rich and Mike know that I hardly ever move out of the historic centre of my city which is a laugh at distances).
Hopwever travelling around France (efficiently) would mean a bit of driving IMO.

If you have to go to France
I'd suggest you travel on the TGV! I've been to France on a number of occasions and while enjoyable enough, I found the trips ..... well ...... a little boring!I found that unless one is fairly fluent in French, one's efforts at speaking French tend to be frowned on and one can be made feel uncomfortable.
Now, I'd suggest you re-think your European Trip and hit Ireland first as this year Ireland is hosting The Gathering! http://www.thegatheringireland.com/ I'm sure there are is possibly a pint or two of Irish blood in you somewhere John! There is a branch of the Clements Family here in Ireland, http://www.houseofnames.com/clements-family-crest You could look them up!
