A challenging problem but SU might be able to do it, perhaps

Alrighty SketchUp Pros. I have a client who has presented a challenge and opportunity to knock their socks off.

I have designed a little guest house and garage for them. The guest quarters is on the second floor and there is a beautiful view in one particular direction. They are trying to get a feel for where is best to place windows and such. Is there a way to place the view accurately in a model?

I would be able to place a builders level at eye height and take a bearing on what was directly level on the cliffs across the valley. I also have a tripod which can be set level. I also have the ability to create spherical panoramas of needed.

I have seen the sky dome technique (though I have never done one). Could this be done with any degree of accuracy? I would love to be able to pull this off.

Thank you for any thoughts you are willing to share in this matter,
      -Sketchy

Just a quick question. Are you planning on rendering this in another rendering application, or straight SketchUp output?

Anything you did, I believe needs to be cross-checked as possible in the field and using common sense. How about using a Google Earth terrain model? It may not show the photo image clearly but might indicate what is in view. Then line up photographs to reflect that.

I saw a reference here to a technique using a renderer and shining colored lights out the windows at the landscape to show field of view.

@Dale: Yes it will just be native SU output

@pbacot: That is a good idea I will play with that a bit and see if anything comes out

@earthmover: That is a very helpful thread indeed. I think this may get me pretty darn close to what I want if I take some careful notes about distance and such. It seems like I could get something close by measuring the angle of the field of view and use this to set the scale. Hmmmmm..

Awesome, and quick responses. I love it! Anyone else?
