Attach sequenced numbers to components?
-
I am trying to find a way to sequentially number the components in my model so they can be exported as a list to a spreadsheet. They are kitchen cabinets in a kitchen design model which I number and describe on an order form.
I have just looked at TIG's Component Reporter which, among other things, gives the instances and sizes of the components in spreadsheet form.(Thanks TIG )
Now what I need is to give each instance a number, the sequence of which I can control, so it will appear in the exported info and on the component in the model. I can then use it to sort the components in the spreadsheet. Is this possible? -
Half sorted. I can make all the instances unique and then number them using the entity info box. That gives me my filter to sort them in the spreadsheet. So now what I want to do is to use that number as a label on the instance in the model,i.e. 3D text next to or on the instance. This would enable me to produce a floor plan of the kitchen with number on or next to the cabinets.
Any ideas?

Check the text tool it reports what you have named the component.
BTW if you have some that are the same the definition name can stay the same. -
Well there's a feature I didn't know about. And it does the trick. By giving each instance its own number in the entity info 'name' box and adding a text label to the instance. About as automated as it gets given that I want control over the numbering order.

There is a plugin to add sequential text - it could be made to number components instead.

Nifty, thanks Jim. Do you mean the script could be adapted to link the numbers to the component? That would be beyond me at the moment.
