Need help with house model
-
Hello fellow Sketchup users, i am a architectural modeler thats recently discovered Sketchup and decided to give it a shot seeing how it looks much better than any other architectural modeling software i`ve seen.
I
ve already watched a bunch of tutorials so i think i got the basics down,so this led me to my first project and needless to say i
ve already encountered some problems.Problem 1 (pictures 1,2 and 3):
Attic exterior and interior walls are on their own layer, problem is there are 2 surfaces(on the front and back wall) that are not visible on either layer when you look at the layers independently but are only visible when you have both layers visibility checked at the same time.Problem 2 (picture 4)
I get this error message when trying to heal some surfaces,or draw lines on the top of the exterior walls.Problem 3 (picture 5)
Surface just won`t heal even tough all edges are coplanar.Problem 4 (picture 6)
Some lines such as this simply can`t be deleted.I
ve been working on this project for over 20 hours and can
t seem to get to the end of it.
If someone would be kind enough to help me and take a look at my model and tell me what is it that i`m doing wrong i would be very grateful.

Just about every problem you've described stems from using layers incorrectly. Take a look at the Help files on using them. Start here.
Why is it you have set the model axes as you have?
-
Here's the SKP file after I fixed the layer associations, reset the model axes and moved the model so it is on the ground plane.

Thank you Dave for the quick reply and the fix,i don`t think i understand what you mean about the axes, i thought their set at the default, its just that i had moved the model around below the axes.
I have watched that video on layers and understand the video but don
t understand how that leads to my weird surface thats not showing in either of the two layers independently but is visible when both layers have visibility on,the line that can
t be deleted,or surfaces that won`t heal.I was beginning to think its a display driver issue with all the weird artifacts but guess i have to go back to watching more tutorials
Thanks again.

I don't know how you got the axes where they are in your model but they are kind of confused. You had your house set underground which would wind up causing you issues.
Did you understand from the text at that link that layers only control the visibility of entities that are associated with them. You had the edges and faces on one layer and the group in which they reside on a different layer. Turning off the visibility for either one of those layers would make the entities invisible.
Follow the instructions at that link. Leave Layer 0 active at all times. Leave all edges and faces on Layer 0. Make layer associations for only groups and components. You've already seen what happens when you don't follow these instructions. Save yourself a lot of trouble and follow what was written about layers.
It's not any problem due to display drivers.

I must have played around with the coordinate system but i didn`t think it was that important where its at in relation to my model to cause such problems.
Yeah i understood the thing about visibility but had no idea that my faces and groups associated with them ended on different layers, but now that you`ve explained it think i get it.
What i did before was to make the walls on layer 0 then group them send them to their layer and when i need to work on the walls i`d have the wall layer active and visible and draw the lines on that wall layer, i see now that was my problem.
If i understand right, when i need to work on my wall group thats on is on the wall layer i must make sure layer 0 is active with the wall layer visible and draw all lines in the 0 layer.
Thank you Dave for taking your time to explain this to me hopefully now i can finish my first model.

Yes. That is the problem.

Really the thing to do is leave Layer 0 active at all times. If you need to edit your wall group which is on the Wall layer, you'll open the group for editing and make the needed changes. At that point you'll be working on Layer 0 where all the other geometry is.
As layers and visibility are concerned, I often use the analogy of the cloaking device on the Romulan Bird of Prey spaceship. (Did you ever watch the original Star Trek series?) The Romulans would activate the cloaking device which would make the ship invisible. It would still be there but it couldn't be seen. In the same way, turning off the visibility of a layer associated with a group or component cloaks the edges and faces inside.

You're welcome.
