I'm a Newbie using SketchUp 8 (Free). When I enter 3D text, it takes on the appearance of the line work that I've selected for the model under Styles. For instance, it has extended lines, which I don't want. How can I get it to display a standard-looking font? Thank you.

        Hi Bill,

There's no way to use two, different styles in the same scene. Since 3D Text is just simple geometry, it will always look like your edge style.

You can hide those edges though. Edit the 3D Text component (I think it's a component but if not, a group) by double clicking on it. Next, go to View > Face style and turn on wireframe mode. Now select all the remaining edges and under the Edit menu, hide them.

Turn wireframe off and exit the component.

You can make a separate scene with another style showing only the text with transparent background, and recombine images of the scenes in another program. Involved, but may be worthwhile, depending on your project.,

Bill, hopefully it is clear that 3D Text is geometry just like the parcel and building footprint lines in your model. The geometry does come in as components. Peter's suggestion to make separate scenes and image exports for the model and the text is a great way to manage this. You can create a separate layer for the 3D text and turn that layer off for the view of the model. then turn off the layer(s) for the model and turn on the 3D text to create a second scene and then export both as images which you'll combine in post process.
