Problems saving edited component
-
I wanted to make a change to one of my components in the component folder within the sketchup program folder. This component shows up when I open the components window and can be placed into a model.
I selected the component file from the component folder and it opened in Sketchup. I made modifications to the component and saved it as the same file. Yet when I either try and place it into a model from the components window or just try and open the file separately from the folder, the changes are not saved. I've repeated this multiple times and still no luck.
Any idea what I should be doing differently? thanks -
Any chance you could post the component?
I regularly modify components from local collections and have never had any difficulty saving the modified version.
Have you tried saving the modified one with a different name?

Unfortunately I can't upload it. But what's happening is that it is getting saved as a "compatibility file". I was able to find it by looking at compatibility files. I'm not exactly sure what that is (windows 7) but some of the others I've saved are there too.

Ah! The problem is that you don't have full administrative rights to the folder(s)in which the components live. We see this issue quite frequently with Win7 users who are trying to install plugins. Maybe the first time anyone has reported this for components. At least the first time I've seen it.
So navigate to the Components folder under SketchUp in the Program Files. Right click on the folder name and choose Properties. Click on the Security. In the pane of that tab choose your user. Click on the button labeled Edit and change all of the permissions to 'All'. Check this for any folders inside the Components folder, too. Change them as needed.
Also, while you're in there, do the same for Materials and Styles. You might want to do something similar to some them at some point.

thanks Dave,
I think that might be it. I'm going to change permissions to everything as I've had some permission errors show up when dealing with other folders.
